Regional Trade: National Workshop to boost Women and Youth Participation in Trade-in-Services

A national workshop on “Unlocking Trade-in Services Opportunities for Youth and Women-led Businesses in SADC Countries” was launched this morning at the Labourdonnais Hotel in Port Louis. The two-day initiative, running from 08 to 09 April 2026, brings together key stakeholders to explore opportunities in regional trade in services.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful; Economic Development Board (EDB) Mauritius Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mahen Abhimanu Kundasamy and Director, Industrial Development and Trade at the SADC Secretariat, Mr Dhuraj Kassee.

In his keynote address, Minister Ramful underpinned that the workshop aims to enhance access for women and youth to opportunities in trade in services within the SADC region. He acknowledged the challenges often faced by these entrepreneurs, such as limited access to finance, difficulties in reaching markets, and inadequate information on regional trade systems. The workshop, he explained, would equip participants with practical tools to navigate these systems and seize business opportunities effectively.

The Minister further highlighted the growing importance of trade in services as a driver of economic growth, underlining its significant contribution to Mauritius’ GDP and employment. He noted that digitalisation and e-commerce are transforming service delivery, enabling businesses to expand into international markets more efficiently. “This workshop provides a timely platform to empower women and youth, strengthen their participation in regional trade and support inclusive and sustainable economic development,” he added.

For his part, Mr Kassee emphasised that trade in services has become a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and regional integration within the SADC region. He pointed out that while women and youth-led enterprises are increasingly contributing to this sector, they continue to face challenges such as limited access to finance, market information and regulatory constraints.

Organised by EDB Mauritius in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, the workshop aims to equip youth and women entrepreneurs with practical skills to access and grow within SADC regional markets.

The programme features sessions on the SADC Protocol on Trade in Services, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, digital payments and branding, while also providing a platform for experience-sharing by successful women-led businesses.

World Press Freedom Day: Media professionals urged to strengthen ethical and responsible journalism

The Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen, called upon journalists and media professionals to uphold ethical, balanced and responsible journalism, on 08 May 2026 in Port Louis, during the closing ceremony of a three-day training programme organised by the Media Trust.

Held in the context of World Press Freedom Day observed annually on 03 May, the training programme titled ‘Médias responsables et libres pour un avenir de paix’ aimed at strengthening the competencies of journalists and media practitioners in ethics, responsibility and the coverage of sensitive events. The programme, which took place from 06 to 08 May 2026, was led by the Director of Media Expertise, Mr Jean-Luc Mootoosamy.

Addressing participants, Junior Minister Narsinghen highlighted the important role played by journalists in safeguarding democracy, constitutional values and social cohesion. He stressed that a free and independent press must also remain responsible, particularly in a plural society such as Mauritius where reporting on sensitive issues requires balance, prudence and professionalism.

The Junior Minister further underlined the need for rigorous and accurate journalism in an era marked by the rapid circulation of information and the growing influence of social media. He urged journalists to verify facts thoroughly, avoid sensationalism, and ensure that reporting serves the public interest. According to him, ethical journalism should contribute to peace-building and help prevent divisions within society.

Mr Narsinghen also dwelt on the importance of continuous professional development for media practitioners and commended the Media Trust for organising the training programme. He pointed to the challenges facing the media sector, including financial pressures and political polarisation, while emphasising the need to support investigative journalism as a key pillar of transparency, accountability and democracy.

Lean Manufacturing programme launched to boost productivity and export competitiveness

A two-day capacity building programme on “Lean Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering” opened, this morning in Ebène, with the objective of improving productivity, operational efficiency, and export competitiveness within Mauritius’ manufacturing sector. The programme is being organised jointly by the Economic Development Board (EDB), the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC), and the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC).

The Minister of Industry, SME and Cooperatives, Mr Sayed Muhammad Aadil Ameer Meea; the Chief Executive Officer of the EDB, Mr Mahen Abhimanu Kundasamy; the Executive Director of the NPCC, Dr Vinaye Ancharaz; the Chairperson of the HRDC, Mr Bhooyasheel Akshay Seedoyal; and other personalities were present at the opening ceremony.

The programme is targeting exporting Small and Medium Enterprises and mid-market enterprises operating in key sectors such as Textile & Apparel, Light Engineering, Jewellery, and Food & Drink. It has been introduced in response to rising production costs, increasing global competition, labour shortages, and the growing need for more efficient and value-added manufacturing systems. Following the training sessions, participating enterprises will benefit from a six-month implementation phase comprising factory-based interventions and productivity improvement projects.

In his address, Minister Ameer Meea underlined that manufacturing remains a major pillar of the Mauritian economy, accounting for more than 89,000 jobs and generating over Rs 60 billion in exports. He nevertheless pointed out that the sector is operating in an increasingly competitive global environment and emphasised the importance of improving productivity through smarter production methods, reduced inefficiencies, and better operational planning.

The Minister further highlighted that the programme is a strategic intervention that combines technical training with practical implementation, with the aim of strengthening operational efficiency and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within enterprises’ production processes. He also underscored the importance of strong institutional collaboration, encouraging enterprises to actively engage in the process in order to build greater resilience and enhance their long-term competitiveness.

For his part, Dr Ancharaz pointed to ongoing economic pressures facing Mauritius, including subdued growth prospects and the need to strengthen export performance in order to address structural trade imbalances. He emphasised that enhancing manufacturing competitiveness remains essential, particularly through improved efficiency in key sectors such as textiles, agro-processing, and light manufacturing, which continue to hold significant growth potential. He further underscored the importance of practical support to enterprises, including digitalisation and productivity tools, to help firms adapt, innovate, and remain competitive in an increasingly challenging global environment.

Workshop on National Road Safety Strategy 2026–2030 marks UN Road Safety Week

The Ministry of Land Transport, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius, organised a consultative workshop to discuss the National Road Safety Strategy 2026–2030 and jointly reflect on the future of road safety in Mauritius, today in Réduit, in the context of the United Nations (UN) Global Road Safety Week.

The UN Global Road Safety Week is observed annually in May to raise awareness on road safety and promote actions towards safer roads. It is being held this year from 08 to 12 May under the theme ‘Safe Walking and Cycling for Sustainable Healthy Cities.’

The Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academia of the UoM, Professor P. Ramasami, and other personalities were present at the opening ceremony. Policy makers, students, academics, researchers, engineers, enforcement authorities, health professionals and other key stakeholders participated in the workshop.

In his address, Minister Mahomed emphasised that the National Road Safety Strategy under discussion during the workshop outlines a new roadmap aimed at strengthening a more resilient road safety ecosystem. He stressed that the contribution of the Road Safety Observatory will be crucial in enabling policymakers to ensure timely and comprehensive implementation of decisions, thereby shifting from reactive responses to more proactive and targeted interventions.

Mr Mahomed called upon more UoM students to show interest in the land transport sector, particularly in research and development, stressing that it remains vital for the well-being and safety of the entire population. The National Road Safety Strategy, he observed, will serve as a comprehensive roadmap towards a future where our roads will be safer for all users, in particular the most vulnerable such as cyclists and pedestrians.

The Minister pointed out that the Strategy is centred on key pillars, including strengthening road infrastructure safety, promoting safer road behaviour, and harnessing technology and innovation. He further underlined that the new Strategy will be more adaptive and forward-looking, taking into account emerging trends and risks, in order to ensure that policies remain relevant to the evolving traffic environment.

Moreover, he stated, greater emphasis will be placed on behavioural change and enforcement will be complemented by sustained public education, community engagement and the integration of road safety in the educational curriculum. The end result is to foster a culture of responsibility and respect on the road, he said.

As for Professor Ramasami, he reassured that the UoM will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Land Transport so as to devise effective measures to enhance road safety in Mauritius. He further underscored the need for roads, vehicles and policies to be designed in a way that minimises the risk of human error on the roads resulting in fatal consequences.

Information session highlights importance of School Health Clubs and student wellbeing

A half-day information session on the theme ‘Strengthening School Health Clubs and student wellbeing’ was held, today, at the auditorium of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Réduit, in the presence of the Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; the World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative, Dr Abdou Salam Gueye; and other personalities.

The session aimed at empowering schools to create safer and healthier environments through student-led health promotion initiatives. The event brought together secondary school heads and managers. Presentations focus on the key role of the School Health Club Programme in promoting healthy lifestyles, mental wellbeing, prevention awareness and student engagement within schools.

The Heads of Schools and Managers were briefed on the way to review the organisational framework for more effective health management and identify activities to be implemented according to a structured timeline. Eight activity categories were proposed namely physical activity; sexual and reproductive health; nutrition; environmental health; mental health; safety and First Aid; substance prevention; and health literacy. Schools will receive a support voucher of Rs 5,000 to assist in these initiatives.

Representatives of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Blood Donors Association, EDYCS Epilepsy Group, the National Agency for Drug Control, the Communicable Disease Control Unit of the Ministry of Health and Wellness also shared expertise and experiences with participants. In addition, the Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Dr Leena Mewasingh, delivered a presentation on the teenage brain and the way neuroscience can help those working with young people.

During the information session, a poster on emotional wellbeing which would be distributed to all schools was launched. The objective is to provide resources and support for stress management, peer support, and help-seeking behaviours. Moreover, two secondary institutions were awarded a cheque of Rs 10,000 each, namely Droopnath Ramphul State College, for their excellent student engagement in health activities, and Patten College boys, for their consistent health club activities.

In his address, the Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to provide not only quality education to every child in Mauritius but also the health and wellness support he or she needs to thrive. School health clubs, he said, are deemed to be essential partners in this mission.

According to Dr Gungapersad, the Ministry is developing comprehensive policies for all children in Mauritius to equip them with the relevant knowledge and tools for their wellbeing, while also creating pathways for students who may not perform well academically. He was adamant that adults have a responsibility to care for children, instil the right values, and enable them to learn at their own pace.

For his part, the WHO Representative spoke on the critical importance of health promoting schools in prevention and raising awareness as he sounded the alarm over the high incidence of diabetes and obesity among Mauritian children. He highlighted the WHO’s global vision that every school should be a place where students learn not only about academic subjects but also the skills and values for healthy living.

Mauritius hosts international conference on indentured labour

Mauritius will host the Indentured Labour Route Project (ILRP) Academic Conference from 13 to 15 May 2026 at the University of Mauritius in Réduit under the theme “The Indentured Labour Route at the Crossroads: Imagining New Futures for the Global Diaspora.” The three-day international gathering will bring together scholars, policymakers, cultural practitioners, researchers, historians, students, and members of the public from across the globe to examine the history, legacy, and future directions of indentured labour studies.

The event is organised at the initiative of the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund, host of the Secretariat of the ILRP under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, the Centre for Research on Slavery and Indenture, and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, France.

The conference aims to promote critical research and strengthen global engagement on indentured labour by linking historical experiences with contemporary legacies and future research directions across the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. It will also chalk out a roadmap for the next five to ten years of research in the field, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among academics, governments, community leaders, and international partners.

Indentured migration remains a major feature of labour mobility in the history of the Indian Ocean and the wider colonial plantation world during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, despite its global significance, the history of indenture continues to be under-researched in world history studies. The conference therefore seeks to promote wider dissemination of knowledge on indentured labour and integrate the subject fully into international academic scholarship.

Among the highlights of the conference are presentations of new research from the global diaspora, roundtable discussions, heritage and identity sessions, visual media and storytelling activities, and the soft launch of the Indentured Labour Route database. A special screening of the documentary “WHO AM I” followed by discussions on heritage, memory, and identity will also feature in the programme.

The opening day, on Wednesday 13 May, will focus on systems, structures, and histories of indenture. The programme includes a keynote lecture by the outgoing President of the International Scientific Committee of the ILRP, Dr Maurits Hassankhan, titled “Indenture at the Crossroads: Reframing Histories, Reconnecting Diasporas, and Shaping Global Futures.” Several academic sessions will explore themes such as heritage, archaeology, labour migration, colonial systems, cultural memory, resistance, and artistic expressions of indenture across Mauritius, India, South Africa, Suriname, Seychelles, Saint Lucia, and other regions.

On the following day, discussions will centre on lived experiences, identity, and community within the indentured diaspora. A tribute session honouring prominent historians of indenture, including Brij V. Lal and Brinsley Samaroo, will be held, while presentations will address issues such as gender, religion, migration, diaspora identity, and everyday life in post-indenture societies. The programme also comprises the screening of a documentary produced by Dr Suchi Gupta and a strategic roundtable on the development of the ILRP database and archival integration.

The final leg of the conference, Friday 15 May, will examine research methodologies, memory, and future directions in indenture studies. Sessions will address labour systems, social regulation, intergenerational trauma, reparations, digital archives, cultural reclamation, and public awareness initiatives linked to indentured labour history. A concluding roundtable on creative memory, storytelling, music, sport, and art in diaspora communities is scheduled.

According to organisers, the conference will provide a platform to bolster historical and contemporary linkages between indenture experiences in different parts of the world. It also aims at stimulating new international partnerships and policy engagement aligned with UNESCO initiatives. The event is also expected to expand public understanding of migration, resilience, identity, and the enduring legacy of indentured labour in shaping global diasporic communities.

International Road Safety Week: Minister Mahomed exhorts children to be ambassadors of change

The Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, urged children to be ambassadors of change, during an awareness campaign held, this morning at De La Salle RCA School in Port Louis, in the context of International Road Safety Week 2026.

The event brought together the Director of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit (TRMSU), Mr Akash Sungker; representatives of the National Land Transport Authority; educators; and students, all united around the message of safer roads for future generations.

A road safety flyer designed for young learners was launched on the occasion and will soon be distributed to all pre-primary and primary schools across the country. This initiative forms part of activities marking the United Nations Global Road Safety Week, observed from 08 to 12 May, under the theme “Make Walking and Cycling Safe.”

In a statement, Minister Mahomed described De La Salle RCA School as one of the oldest schools in Port Louis, adding that he was honoured to speak to the children on such an important issue. He encouraged them to become ambassadors of change and help promote responsible behaviour on the roads within their families and communities.

The Minister also highlighted the implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for the Continuum of Road Safety Education, developed by the Mauritius Institute of Education in collaboration with the TRMSU and the Ministry of Education and Human Resource. The programme integrates road safety education into Grades 1 to 6 and aims to equip children with the knowledge and reflexes needed to protect themselves and others on the road.

He further indicated that efforts are underway to extend the framework to pre-primary and secondary institutions, with the objective of reaching a wider audience and nurturing a new generation of responsible, safety-conscious road users in Mauritius.

International Nurses Day: Nurses honoured for vital contribution to healthcare delivery

On the occasion of the International Nurses Day 2026 observed annually on 12 May, an official ceremony was held this morning at the Polytechnics Mauritius in Pamplemousses, to honour the vital role and dedication of nursing officers in delivering quality healthcare to the population.

The Director of Nursing at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mr B.R Guness, the Registrar of Nursing Council, Mr Krist Dhurmah, and the lecturer at Polytechnics Mauritius in Nursing, Mr Jay Seegolam, were among the key attendees.

In his address, Mr Guness highlighted that the day provides an opportunity to recognise and valorise the invaluable contribution of the nursing community, which remains at the heart of the healthcare system in Mauritius. He stressed the importance of supporting, investing in and empowering nurses to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services and enhanced patient safety.

Speaking on the theme, he indicated that it addresses key challenges facing the healthcare sector, including workforce shortages, increasing healthcare demands and the growing need for nursing leadership in strengthening health systems. “It is now more important than ever to develop the competencies and professional qualities of nurses to ensure quality healthcare services,” he said.

For his part, Mr Dhurmah recalled that the Nursing Council serves as the regulatory body responsible for licensing nurses to practise. He emphasised the Council’s pivotal role in professionalising the nursing profession, ensuring that practitioners are adequately trained, and upholding ethical standards within the sector. He further welcomed the range of specialised courses currently being offered by universities for nurses, describing the initiative as commendable.

International Nurses Day

The Day is celebrated on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, the founder of modern nursing, widely known as the "Lady with the Lamp" for her care of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. The theme retained for this year is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

Mauritius strengthens Cancer Care through collaboration with Indian Specialists

Dr Saravana Rajamanickam, a thoracic surgical oncologist and pioneer in robotic oncology, and Dr Deepti Mishra, a consultant surgical oncologist specialising in minimally invasive and robotic cancer surgery, from Thangam Cancer Centre in India, were on a visit to Mauritius from 04 to 11 May 2026.

In this context, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met with the specialists on 08 May 2026 at the New Cancer Centre in Phoenix.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo highlighted that the complex surgeries, which last between six to eight hours, are being performed free of charge by the visiting doctors. He expressed gratitude for their dedication and encouraged them, as well as other members of their medical team, to continue visiting Mauritius to assist local patients.

Dr Rajamanickam pointed out that there has been a noticeable rise in cancer cases in Mauritius, attributing the increase mainly to smoking, the consumption of processed foods, and the extensive use of pesticides.

For her part, Dr Mishra expressed the wish to continue collaborating with the Mauritian Government by sharing her expertise and providing hands-on training and specialised knowledge to Mauritian doctors.

Minister Boolell encourages youth participation in agricultural ventures

The National Launch of World Food Forum (WFF) Mauritius, aiming to strengthen youth engagement in agrifood systems, was held on 09 May 2026, in the presence of the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, at the Holiday Inn Mauritius Mon Trésor.

The event, an initiative of the Grand River South East Youth Circle, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), brought together representatives of Ministries, international organisations, youth leaders and key stakeholders.

Minister Boolell highlighted the importance of research and development in the agricultural sector to enhance the value of local products. He stressed the urgent need to boost local production in order to strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imports in the context of the ongoing Middle East crisis.

He also encouraged more young people to engage in agricultural entrepreneurship and called for increased investment in quality research, innovation, and technology to support the sustainable development of the sector

As part of the forum, a group of youngsters of the GRSEYC will undertake a range of agricultural projects for a period of six months with the technical support of the United Nations and the FAO.

It is recalled that the WFF is a global platform established under the auspices of the FAO. It serves as an inclusive mechanism to mobilise youth as strategic partners in the transformation of agrifood systems. In alignment with this global framework, the establishment of the WFF Mauritius National Youth Chapter seeks to institutionalise youth engagement in agrifood systems governance, innovation and policy dialogue at national level.

Government adopts multisectoral strategy against communicable diseases, says Minister Bachoo

“The present situation is being dealt with in a serious, structured and evidence-based manner,” said the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, today in the National Assembly, in reply to a Private Notice Question regarding the recent outbreaks of chikungunya, dengue, leptospirosis and Mpox in Mauritius.

At the outset, the Minister reassured that his Ministry was treating the situation “with utmost seriousness,” while outlining the number of confirmed cases, deaths, preventive actions and national response mechanisms being implemented to contain the spread of communicable diseases.

From January to 11 May 2026, Mauritius recorded 2,816 local cases of chikungunya, including 102 active cases, while all five imported cases have recovered. Regarding dengue, one local case and six imported cases were reported, with all patients having recovered. As for leptospirosis, 21 cases were registered, including six deaths involving patients with severe forms of the disease and underlying co-morbidities, including one patient who was brought dead to hospital. Two imported cases of Mpox involving travellers arriving from Madagascar were also detected, with both patients having recovered and no signs of infection reported among their contacts.

Explaining the characteristics of the diseases, the Minister pointed out that chikungunya and dengue are mosquito-borne viral infections transmitted mainly by infected Aedes mosquitoes, while leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease spread through contact with water, soil or mud contaminated by infected animal urine. Mpox, he recalled, spreads mainly through close contact with infected persons, contaminated materials or animals.

Since the outbreaks, extensive sensitisation campaigns have been carried out nationwide. According to Mr Bachoo, these comprised 224 community sensitisation sessions, 61 health education talks in high-risk areas, sensitisation programmes for 400 municipal and district council workers, more than 200 radio and television interventions, campaigns across nine digital media platforms, and the distribution of over 30,000 posters and leaflets.

The Minister further underlined that large-scale vector control and environmental sanitation exercises are underway. A total of 25,341 premises were inspected, while 524 sanitary notices, 2,195 water notices and 1,300 statements of nuisance were issued. More than 105,905 premises were treated with larvicides, mist blowing activities were conducted at 81,535 locations, and indoor residual spraying was carried out in 1,811 houses. In addition, 100,000 male sterile mosquitoes are being released weekly as part of mosquito population control measures.

With regard to leptospirosis, Mr Bachoo cautioned that “these diseases cannot be controlled by the Ministry of Health and Wellness alone,” adding that “a One Health and multisectoral approach is essential” as the diseases involve the intersection of human health, animal health and the environment. On that score, several multisectoral meetings have been organised with Ministries responsible for Environment, Agriculture, Veterinary Services and Local Government, alongside municipal and district councils, police authorities, public health inspectors, hospitals, laboratories and private stakeholders.

The Minister stated that Government’s strategy hinges on strengthened surveillance, early diagnosis, standardised clinical management, public sensitisation, rodent control and occupational health protection. Mapping of high-risk localities and clusters has also been undertaken, notably in Plaine Wilhems, Port Louis and Black River for chikungunya cases.

Referring to rodent control measures, the Minister informed that the Rodent Control Unit carried out 25,492 interventions in 2025 compared to 9,751 in 2024. Measures include intensified baiting exercises, environmental clean-up campaigns, drain cleaning, waste management, clearing of illegal dumping sites, and interventions around rivers, canals, livestock areas and residential zones.

The Minister also highlighted the contribution of local authorities, which cleaned around 3,100 plots of bare land, intensified rodent control activities. They issued some 2,800 notices, conducted regular drain cleaning operations, and organised fortnightly flushing of markets and fairs with the support of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr Bachoo further reassured that all regional hospitals and designated health institutions are equipped with isolation and treatment facilities for infectious diseases. Enhanced surveillance measures are also in place at the airport and port, where sanitary officers screen incoming passengers and vessels. Travellers arriving from affected countries are subject to follow-up monitoring by Regional Health Offices.

In addition, the Ministry maintains adequate stocks of vaccines for Mpox, mosquito repellent creams, laboratory testing kits, personal protective equipment, insecticides, rodenticides and essential medicines, including antibiotics, analgesics and intensive care drugs.

The Minister urged the public to play its role by maintaining clean surroundings and preventing mosquito breeding and rodent infestation. He deplored that not many citizens are not maintaining their lands thereby causing public nuisances to the neighbourhood.

Mauritius recorded 9,393 dengue cases and eight deaths in 2024, compared to only 55 cases and no deaths in 2025. “I am confident that the decisions taken by the Government as far as public health and sanitary measures are concerned will bear their fruits and that we will win this battle against the spread of these diseases,” Mr Bachoo said in his concluding remarks.

Acting Prime Minister Navarre-Marie urges enhanced response to family abandonment and abuse

The need to strengthen protection and support mechanisms for victims of domestic violence and abandoned children was highlighted by the Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, this morning, at a symposium titled ‘Family Abandonment: A Call for Justice’, held at the City Council of Port Louis.

The event was organised by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Fam An Mars (FAM) in collaboration with the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Quatre Bornes. It served as a platform for women to voice their struggles while also calling for greater awareness and more effective responses to cases of family abandonment.

The Attorney-General, Mr Gavin Patrick Cyril Glover; the Lord Mayor of the City Council of Port Louis, Mr Aslam Adam Hosenally; the Ombudsperson for Children, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah; the President of FAM, Mrs Ruqayah B. Khayrattee; the President of JCI Quatre Bornes, Ms Srirupa Wawge; and several other personalities were present.

In her address, the Acting Prime Minister underlined the importance of listening to survivors and victims of domestic violence in the review and amendment of existing legislation. She noted that cases of violence against women and abandoned children are reported daily to the Ministry and stressed that laws must continuously evolve to address gaps, including emerging forms of abuse such as financial violence. She also emphasised that, beyond legal reforms, effective enforcement of the law by all stakeholders, including the police, courts and support services, remains essential.

Mrs Navarre-Marie further called for continuous and professional training of frontline officers, police personnel, NGOs and shelter staff to ensure victims are treated with dignity and empathy. She highlighted the difficulties faced by children in shelters, particularly those who are undeclared and unable to access essential services such as education, healthcare and employment opportunities. She reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening support systems for vulnerable children and families in collaboration with relevant institutions and NGOs, while encouraging victims of abuse to come forward and seek assistance.

The Attorney-General, for his part, stressed that family abandonment constitutes a serious social issue that requires sustained public discussion and awareness. He recalled that the family plays a fundamental role in shaping values and resilience, warning that its breakdown places significant emotional and financial strain on children and other vulnerable members, with women often bearing the greatest responsibility.

Mr Glover further explained that family abandonment is generally the result of combined pressures, including financial hardship, unemployment, addiction, and relationship breakdown. He referred to existing legal provisions under the Criminal Code and the Children’s Act, noting that amendments are being considered to strengthen enforcement and close legal gaps. He added that legal action alone is not sufficient and must be supported by counselling services, addiction treatment, parenting programmes, and accessible social support systems to effectively address the problem.

May Measurement Month campaign launched to promote early detection of hypertension and NCDs

A series of activities in the context of May Measurement Month was launched, today at the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin/Rose Hill, in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo.

Also present at the event were the Junior Minister of Tourism, Mr Jean Sydney Pierre; the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill, Mrs Gina Frances Lilianna Andréa Poonoosamy; health professionals and other stakeholders.

Organised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the campaign aims to raise awareness on the prevention and early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension. Activities conducted during the event included blood pressure screening sessions, counselling services, exhibitions on health-related issues, and displays of food plate models to encourage healthier eating habits and lifestyle choices.

In his address, Minister Bachoo described hypertension as a “silent killer”, pointing out that many individuals remain unaware they are suffering from the condition until serious complications occur. He stressed that hypertension is closely associated with heart disease, strokes and renal insufficiency, while statistics showed that 527 deaths linked to hypertension and some 1,070 stroke-related deaths were recorded in Mauritius in 2024. According to the Minister, nearly one-third of the Mauritian population is affected by hypertension, with a significant number of cases remaining undiagnosed.

Dr Bachoo also expressed concern over the growing prevalence of hypertension among young people, noting that cases have been detected among secondary school students through school health programmes. He attributed the rise in hypertension and other NCDs largely to unhealthy lifestyles, including poor dietary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity.

The Minister further highlighted the various awareness campaigns, outreach programmes and screening exercises being carried out nationwide, while reaffirming Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services and specialised diabetes and hypertension care units in regional hospitals. He urged the population to adopt healthier lifestyles, undergo regular medical check-ups and prioritise prevention to reduce complications and save lives.

For his part, Mr Jean Sydney Pierre encouraged citizens to make full use of Mauritius’ free public healthcare system, including mediclinics, decentralised healthcare facilities, screening services and counselling programmes. He underlined the increasing burden of NCDs such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension in the country, stressing that these diseases are often linked to lifestyle habits and can lead to severe health complications if not detected and managed early.

The event also seeks to address contemporary post-indenture challenges and diasporic connections while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among policymakers, researchers, and community leaders.

In his keynote address, Minister Gondeea stated that the conference marks an important milestone for Mauritius and all nations linked through the shared history of indenture. He noted that Mauritius remains one of the most significant places to host such a gathering, as the history of indenture is deeply rooted in the country’s identity and heritage. Referring to the Aapravasi Ghat, he underlined that the UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a symbol of courage, resilience and hope for generations of indentured labourers.

The Minister further highlighted that the conference goes beyond revisiting history and aims to shape the future of indenture studies through international dialogue, research and cooperation. He also welcomed the soft launch of the Indentured Labour Database, describing it as an important step towards positioning Mauritius as a global centre for research, documentation and collaboration in indenture studies. Reaffirming Government’s commitment to heritage preservation, he stressed that heritage should serve as a bridge that unites people and preserves humanity’s shared memory for future generations.

For her part, Dr Gounder emphasised that the ILRP has evolved into a global initiative connecting countries, institutions and communities linked through the history of indenture. She noted that one of the project’s key priorities is the development of an international indentured labour database bringing together archival records, migration histories and community knowledge into a shared global resource.

As for Mr Ramadass, he underlined the major contribution of indentured labourers in shaping societies, cultures and economies around the world. He reiterated the commitment of the AGTF to advancing research, conservation, education and dialogue on indentured labour history while ensuring that this important heritage continues to be preserved and transmitted to future generations.

Sustainable Development: Transforming Ravenala into eco-friendly craft products

The Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) in collaboration with the Academy of Design and Innovation (ADI) is holding an exhibition on the theme “Creating Craft Product using Ravenala Madagascariensis and Textile Fabric Waste”. The initiative, which is scheduled on Friday 15 May 2026 at Vallée des Prêtres in Port Louis, highlights ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development, environmental preservation, and innovation through the transformation of invasive plant species and industrial textile waste into eco-friendly craft products.

Mauritius is well-known for its rich biodiversity with unique fauna and flora. However, these natural resources are increasingly under threat due to deforestation and the proliferation of invasive plant and animal species, which hinder the growth and survival of endemic plants within the Mauritian ecosystem.

In this context, the National Parks and Conservation Service has been undertaking the clearing of Ravenala Madagascariensis, commonly known as Ravenala, from forested areas to safeguard native and endemic species. Once cut, the remaining plant parts are often left in forests, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and raising additional environmental and public health concerns.

To address these challenges, the ADI developed this circular-economy-based project funded by the MRIC. The project focuses on transforming harvested Ravenala plants and discarded textile fabric waste into value-added products while minimising environmental impact.

Through extensive experimentation with different materials and proportions, several transformation processes were developed to convert the raw materials into handmade paper, organic fertilisers, ropes, packaging materials, handcrafted jewellery, and bio-composite materials for interior applications, among others.

The project also explores the collaborative use of Ravenala fibre and industrial textile waste as innovative alternative raw materials for the craft industry. Ravenala fibre, known for its remarkable tensile strength, already has several applications in Mauritius, including natural fencing, construction materials, indoor blinds, and other handcrafted items. At the same time, recycling textile waste helps address one of the major sources of industrial pollution by giving discarded fabric a renewed purpose instead of allowing it to accumulate in landfills.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the ADI’s commitment to fostering a circular economy, the initiative seeks to contribute to environmental sustainability while creating new economic and employment opportunities within the local craft sector.

The project further aims to develop a unique and sustainable niche in both local and international craft markets by combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles. The outcomes of the research have been documented to support further development, innovation, and replication of the initiative in the future.

New Trauma and Emergency Unit set up at Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital

A new Trauma and Emergency Unit aimed at strengthening emergency health care services was inaugurated, yesterday at Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem; the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed; the Member of Parliament, Dr Farhad Ismael Aumeer; and higher officials were present.

The project, announced as part of the 2025 Budget measures to modernise public health care services, features upgraded infrastructure including a new minor operation theatre and a colour-coded triage system designed to improve patient flow and emergency response. The red, yellow and green zones will allow medical teams to prioritise patients according to the severity of their conditions, ensuring faster and more efficient treatment.

In his address, Minister Bachoo stated that the inauguration of the Unit reflects Government’s firm commitment to modernising the health care system, strengthening life-saving services and ensuring that the public hospitals are better equipped to respond to critical situations. “With the establishment of the Trauma and Emergency Unit across our regional hospitals, we are bringing our system closer to international standards,” he said.

“The initiative forms part of a wider transformation and reform of the public health system which purports to investing in infrastructure, reinforcing specialised services, and reviewing the way care is delivered across the country,” added the Minister. He indicated that after the inauguration of the Trauma and Emergency Unit in March at Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital, similar units will be set up at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) Hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Victoria Hospital.

According to Mr Bachoo, the new Unit will provide a more organised and efficient environment for the management of emergency cases as it adopts an integrated approach. He averred that it will support faster assessment and decision-making together with better coordination among teams, and more timely intervention for patients requiring urgent care.

Regarding the introduction of the structured coloured-coded triage system, the Minister underlined its benefits as it will allow patients to be assessed according to the emergency of their conditions, reduce unnecessary delays and enable emergency departments to function more safely and efficiently. He explained that red category patients will need immediate life-saving interventions, yellow category patients will be given urgent medical attention and green category patients who have less urgent conditions can safely wait for assessment.

While paying tribute to doctors, nurses, frontliners and all health care workers for their hard work and dedication, Mr Bachoo condemned the physical and verbal violence directed at them. He specifically deplored a recent incident in which staff from the Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente (SAMU), dispatched to Petite Rivière following a road accident, were attacked. The Minister called for a change in mindset and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent any harm to medical professionals and their vehicles.

For their part, Ministers Uteem and Mahomed, along with Dr Aumeer, welcomed the establishment of the Trauma and Emergency Unit, describing it as a valuable addition to the hospital. Mr Uteem commended the frontliners and hospital personnel for working under pressure to save lives and deliver effective services to the public. He emphasised the importance of providing staff with suitable working conditions and appropriate psychological support to prevent burnout. Meanwhile, Mr Mahomed highlighted that, in cases of road accident injuries and trauma, time is of the essence, adding the new Unit will ensure more timely and effective care for accident victims.

High-level conference explores the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence

Mauritius is seeking to strengthen its role in the ongoing global digital transformation and the emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape, a vision highlighted this morning at the opening of the High-level Conference, ‘Reimagining Tomorrow in the Age of AI – Where Opportunity Meets Everyone’, held in Trianon in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful.

Organised by the Bauen Solutions Ltd in collaboration with EXU Ltd, it aims at bringing together leaders from both the public and private sectors to explore the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Mauritius’ economy, workforce and national development. The conference will be led by Mr Matthew Griffin, an internationally recognised futurist and adviser to Governments and global organisations.

In his keynote address, Minister Ramful characterised AI as a defining force of the 21st century, reshaping everything from global economies and governance, healthcare, security to diplomacy. He noted that national influence now also stems from technological readiness and digital capability. Mauritius, he informed is motivated to strengthen partnerships to build durable national capability and become a trusted AI governance jurisdiction and a constructive regional partner.

Addressing the panel theme, “From Fear to Strategy,” the Minister argued that while every major technological revolution in history has generated uncertainty and disruption, history also teaches that those who prepare early, invest wisely and adapt strategically are the ones who benefit the most. He therefore called for AI to be approached with clarity, ambition, vision and responsibility, rather than fear.

Speaking about Mauritius’ Strategic Position in the Age of AI, he indicated that the country is committed to engage with it proactively and strategically and has moved decisively with key initiatives. These include: the launch of the National AI Strategy 2025–2029 together with the FAIR Guidelines for the Development and Use of AI and the establishment of an operational AI Marketplace.

According to Mr Ramful, these concrete institutional foundations place Mauritius in a distinctive international position as a small island State seeking to lead credibly on responsible AI governance, emphasising that we must aspire to become active contributors to innovation, trusted regional partners and creators of value within the global digital economy.

Mauritius’ objective, he said, is focused on demonstrating how responsible, ethical and inclusive AI governance can be implemented effectively within a small State and made available as a model that others may adapt.

The Minister also asserted that Mauritius must leverage its comparative advantages specifically its governance credibility, strong rule-of-law institutions, established International Financial Centre ecosystem, unique multilingual profile and strategic geopolitical position at the intersection of Africa, Asia and Europe to serve as a bridge for dialogue, standards, governance cooperation and responsible innovation.

Moreover, he insisted on the benefits of international cooperation and strategic partnerships when navigating the AI transition, which will enable shaping a future where AI serves humanity collectively and responsibly.

Workshop highlights integration of AI and digital fabrication technologies

A two-day workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence Meets Digital Fabrication” was launched, this morning at the Telecom Campus in Ebène, by the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul.

Organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Mauritius Digital Promotion Agency, the initiative targets university-level students and aims to strengthen technological literacy and innovation in Mauritius. The workshop aims to explore the convergence of AI and digital fabrication technologies, including additive manufacturing and their growing impact on local entrepreneurship, prototyping, and industrial development.

This initiative bridges the gap between digital ideation and physical manufacturing by integrating Generative AI as a ‘design thinking assistant’. Students will move from conceptualisation to a 3D-printed base product using Meshy AI, which they will subsequently enhance with Gemini-driven ideas and value-added features.

In his remarks, Minister Ramtohul highlighted that the workshop will provide university students with hands-on exposure to digital fabrication, AI-assisted design thinking, and creative problem-solving. This event, he pointed out, will be laying the groundwork for a broader innovation and startup-focused initiative.

While emphasising that AI is becoming a key factor in a country’s economy, the Minister highlighted the growing importance of AI in economic development and recalled the recent launch of the National AI Strategy 2025–2029, which seeks to position Mauritius as a regional high-tech hub. He also referred to Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen information security and data protection frameworks, including the adoption of ISO/IEC 27001 standards and the review of existing legislation to ensure greater public confidence in the protection of personal data and digital systems.

According to Dr Ramtohul, young people nowadays want to explore projects which are commercially viable. As such, the National Research and Innovation Institute Bill, once adopted in the National Assembly, will enable Government to better devise fiscal, technological, social or mentoring-based policies to adequately support young innovators and entrepreneurs, he underlined.

Government, he added, is also currently reviewing the laws to strengthen data protection so as to ensure that all Mauritians feel comfortable with the way relevant authorities protect their data in terms of technology and good practices.

Regional Cooperation: Validation workshop focuses on role of green value chains

A Validation Workshop on the theme “Developing Green Value Chains in Southern Africa in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): A Case Study of Mauritius” was held, today at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis. National stakeholders, regional representatives and development partners met to discuss strategies for strengthening climate-resilient and circular economies across Southern Africa.

The workshop was opened by the Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen, in the presence of the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Janmajaising Bissoondoyal, the Chief Executive Officer of the Economic Development Board, Mr Abhimanu Kundasamy, and the Director of the Subregional Office for Southern Africa of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ms Eunice Kamwendo.

In his keynote address, Junior Minister Narsinghen described the AfCFTA as the most ambitious economic integration project undertaken by the African Union, with the potential to transform trade and industrial development across the continent. He pointed out that climate change is increasingly affecting trade competitiveness and regional value chains through floods, droughts and cyclones that disrupt infrastructure, logistics and production systems.

The Minister stressed that the transition towards circular and green economies should not be viewed solely as an environmental agenda, but also as a strategy for competitiveness, resilience and sustainable trade. According to him, circular economy approaches can help reduce import dependence, address resource inefficiency and strengthen resilience against climate-related disruptions by promoting recycling, waste valorisation, sustainable production and localised value chains.

Referring to the report being validated during the workshop, Mr Narsinghen highlighted that the study demonstrates how circular economy interventions embedded in trade and industrial policies can stabilise supply chains, create employment opportunities, support youth and women entrepreneurs, and strengthen compliance with emerging sustainability standards in export markets. He also highlighted the importance of regional collaboration under the AfCFTA framework, particularly through instruments such as the Rules of Origin, the Protocol on Trade in Services and the Investment Protocol all geared towards facilitating the development of regional circular infrastructure and cross-border green services.

The Junior Minister further noted that Mauritius was selected as a strategic case study due to its status as a small, open and import-dependent island economy facing acute climate and trade vulnerabilities. He recalled that Government has already embarked on a circular economy transition through initiatives such as the Circular Economy Roadmap and Action Plan, the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Act, and national waste segregation and circular skills programmes.

The objective of the workshop, organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa through its Subregional Office for Southern Africa, is to validate the findings, sector priorities and policy recommendations of the study through multi-stakeholder engagement. It also seeks to strengthen regional dialogue among Southern African Development Community Member States on the development of green and circular value chains within the AfCFTA framework.

Renal Transplant Unit successfully performs its first kidney transplant surgery

Mauritius reached a major milestone in healthcare with the successful completion, yesterday, of the first kidney transplant surgery at the newly inaugurated Renal Transplant Unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle.

The complex procedure was carried out by a team of international specialists in collaboration with local surgeons and medical staff. The visiting experts included Dr Sonal Asthana, Clinical Lead and Multi-Organ Transplant Surgeon at the Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, India, who will lead the surgery, alongside Dr Sanju Sobnach and Dr Bernd Strobele, both Multi-Organ Transplant Surgeons from Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, Cape Town.

The foreign specialists are currently in Mauritius for several days and are also consulting patients in outpatient clinics as part of preparations for future transplant procedures.

Present on the occasion, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, commended the excellent work undertaken by the team of specialists supported by local health personnel, highlighting India's vital role in providing the state-of-the-art infrastructure. He also recognised the contribution of South African-based Mauritian specialist, Dr Sanju Sobnach, and thanked the Indian experts for their continued support.

Mr Bachoo announced that arrangements are being put in place to ensure that renal transplant surgeries can henceforth be performed locally, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment. He further noted that two visiting Indian oncologists recently carried out 12 surgeries on paediatric patients, reflecting Government’s commitment to expanding specialised healthcare services in Mauritius.

As for the High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava, he expressed immense pride in the successful renal transplant performed at the newly inaugurated Renal Transplant Unit which, he recalled, obtained support from the Indian Government.

He underlined that India’s support for initiatives such as the Renal Transplant Unit reflects its commitment to strengthening Mauritius’ healthcare infrastructure and enhancing the quality of patient care.

Dissemination workshop highlights need for reforms to advance women’s leadership in Mauritius

A dissemination workshop on the findings and policy recommendations of the study titled ‘The Transition of Women to Senior Leadership Positions in Mauritian Institutions: Unravelling Disparities and Charting a Course for Equality’ was held, yesterday, at the University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM) in Pointe aux Sables.

The workshop was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie; the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Raj Pentiah; the Director General of the UTM, Prof. (Dr.) Hemant B. Chittoo; and other personalities.

Conducted by Senior Lecturer at the School of Business, Management and Finance of the UTM, Dr Deepika Faugoo, the research was funded by the UTM and carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms. The study examines the barriers preventing women from accessing senior leadership positions and proposes policy measures aimed at fostering equality and unlocking women’s leadership potential in Mauritius.

The study points out that structural and systemic barriers interact and reinforce one other, thereby creating a powerful ceiling over women’s leadership potential. Examples of the structural barriers identified include inflexible work-life policies/ lack of flexible working; societal and cultural norms; patriarchal attitudes, and limited support from decision-makers. Male-dominated toxic work culture, gender bias, sexual harassment and glass ceiling effect were cited as systemic barriers.

To address these challenges, the study recommends a range of actions in several specific areas: institutionalise flexible working and family-friendly policies; childcare leave policies; executive leadership training for women; affirmative actions and quotas; top management accountability and transparency, and addressing the persistent glass ceiling, among others.

In her address for the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the study as an important basis for reflection and a starting point of action. “Its findings will contribute to the ongoing national efforts to enhance women’s participation in leadership, governance and socio-economic development,” she stated. Mrs Navarre-Marie encouraged all institutions to consider the recommendations of the study not merely as a reading list and theoretical proposals, but as a practical mandate for reforms and concrete actions.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that the country’s future depends on its ability to fully harness the potential of all citizens. “When women rise, institutions become stronger; when women lead, societies become fairer; and when equality advances, democracy becomes more than a constitutional promise and becomes a lived reality,” she underlined.

For his part, the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms reaffirmed Government’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities. He also underscored that public policies must respond to the needs of the population as they have a direct impact on citizens’ lives. Mr Pentiah stressed that policy decisions should be evidence-based, as well as reflective of the people’s voices.

Accordingly, the Minister mentioned that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation includes provisions within its legal framework to establish a research-based laboratory. He cited the example of the forthcoming Public Sector Reform Bill, for which workshops featuring a well-structured rapporteur mechanism are being organised to ensure effective information gathering aligned with the requirements of the public service sector.

Mauritius to benefit from Korea Customs Service’s expertise to strengthen risk management systems

The collaboration between Mauritius and the Korea Customs Service to strengthen risk management systems and integrating advanced technologies for monitoring parcels entering the country due to the rise of e-commerce was at the fore of discussions during a meeting held today in Port Louis between the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, and a delegation from the Korea Customs Service.

The Korean delegation was accompanied by the Director General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), Rohit Ramnawaz.

In a statement following the meeting, Junior Minister Damry highlighted that Government’s vision is to digitalise services to improve effectiveness and efficiency, while managing the growing risks linked to drug trafficking and illicit products.

He pointed out that between 4,000 to 5,000 parcels transit through Mauritian territory every day, thus posing a major challenge for MRA’s Customs division in detecting drugs and illicit products. He also seized the opportunity to commend the work already undertaken by the MRA in combating illicit trafficking and risk management, as evidenced by the major seizures regularly carried out by Customs Officials at the airport and the port.

As for Mr Ramnawaz, he emphasised the need to anticipate new forms of crime linked to the increase in online shopping and parcel volumes. He observed that the MRA is already working on advanced scanning systems to more effectively detect drugs, weapons and other illicit products.

The collaboration with the Korea Customs Service will enable Mauritian authorities to take proactive measures to address the issue of drug and illicit products trafficking linked to online shopping and the increase in parcels volume entering the country.
