Regional Trade: National Workshop to boost Women and Youth Participation in Trade-in-Services

A national workshop on “Unlocking Trade-in Services Opportunities for Youth and Women-led Businesses in SADC Countries” was launched this morning at the Labourdonnais Hotel in Port Louis. The two-day initiative, running from 08 to 09 April 2026, brings together key stakeholders to explore opportunities in regional trade in services.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful; Economic Development Board (EDB) Mauritius Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mahen Abhimanu Kundasamy and Director, Industrial Development and Trade at the SADC Secretariat, Mr Dhuraj Kassee.

In his keynote address, Minister Ramful underpinned that the workshop aims to enhance access for women and youth to opportunities in trade in services within the SADC region. He acknowledged the challenges often faced by these entrepreneurs, such as limited access to finance, difficulties in reaching markets, and inadequate information on regional trade systems. The workshop, he explained, would equip participants with practical tools to navigate these systems and seize business opportunities effectively.

The Minister further highlighted the growing importance of trade in services as a driver of economic growth, underlining its significant contribution to Mauritius’ GDP and employment. He noted that digitalisation and e-commerce are transforming service delivery, enabling businesses to expand into international markets more efficiently. “This workshop provides a timely platform to empower women and youth, strengthen their participation in regional trade and support inclusive and sustainable economic development,” he added.

For his part, Mr Kassee emphasised that trade in services has become a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and regional integration within the SADC region. He pointed out that while women and youth-led enterprises are increasingly contributing to this sector, they continue to face challenges such as limited access to finance, market information and regulatory constraints.

Organised by EDB Mauritius in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, the workshop aims to equip youth and women entrepreneurs with practical skills to access and grow within SADC regional markets.

The programme features sessions on the SADC Protocol on Trade in Services, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, digital payments and branding, while also providing a platform for experience-sharing by successful women-led businesses.

Mauritius-Russia ties reinforced through new cultural and heritage projects

Major cultural and heritage projects including plans for an authorised replica of the world’s only known life illustration of the Dodo, a documentary and competitions dedicated to the extinct bird, as well as the establishment of a memorial tomb for Russian sailors who perished while exploring Indian Ocean sea routes in 1857, were announced yesterday at a reception marking Russia Day, hosted by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mauritius, Mrs Irada Avtandilovna Zeynalova, in Ebene.

The President of the Republic, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool; the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful, were present. Toasts were raised by the dignitaries in honour of the friendship of Russia and Mauritius and their continued relations.

The Attorney General, Mr Gavin Glover, other Ministers, Junior Ministers and members of the Diplomatic Corps, were also in attendance.

A photo exhibition and a cultural event showcasing Russian arts were held on the occasion. The official copy of the famous painting by Ustad Mansur was gifted to Prime Minister by the Ambassador Zeynalova.

In her keynote address, the Russian Ambassador reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between Mauritius and Russia through a clear vision and concrete actions. She highlighted a diverse range of cultural initiatives organised in Mauritius to deepen these bonds. Key highlights include performances by the Moscow Conservatory and the Russian ballet, alongside exhibitions featuring films, lectures and artworks by Russian photographers and painters.

Additionally, she noted several significant donations, such as Tchaikovsky compositions gifted to the Conservatoire François-Mitterrand, copies of the documentary 'The Unknown War' presented to the Museum of Rodrigues and historic cameras donated to the Museum of Photography.

Beyond cultural exchange, the Ambassador emphasised Russia’s ongoing contribution to local youth development through full scholarships for Mauritians to study in Russia.

The Ambassador expressed gratitude to Mauritius and other African nations for their position and neutrality pertaining to the challenge of racial purity that Russia is facing. Turning to Mauritius’ fight for sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, Ambassador Zeynalova renewed Russia's support, stating that all nations deserve freedom and dignity.

She also underscored the importance of cooperation in securing a better future for younger generations, stressing that this can be achieved through mutual learning, knowledge-sharing and partnerships aimed at addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, food security and the fight against drugs.

Finally, she affirmed that Russia stands ready to share its knowledge and experience with its friends, noting that cooperation, economic diversification, and perseverance are crucial in today's vulnerable global environment.

Health promotion campaign brings healthcare services closer to the public

In a bid to bring preventive healthcare services closer to the population and promote greater public awareness on maintaining healthy lifestyles, the Ministry of Health and Wellness organised today a Health Promotion Campaign at the Mahogany Shopping Mall in Beau Plan. The campaign forms part of the Ministry's ongoing nationwide efforts which will be carried out across the country to promote wellness, enhance public awareness of health issues and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, along with the Junior Minister, Mrs Anishta Babooram, and the Member of Parliament, Mr Kaviraj Rookny, participated in the launching and toured the various exhibition stands. The event also brought together health professionals and representatives of several institutions to provide members of the public with a range of health information, screening services and counselling.

Members of the public benefitted from free screening for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), enabling them to assess their health status and obtain advice from healthcare professionals. Information and exhibition stands were also set up to showcase the services offered by nutritionists, blood transfusion services, public health and food safety units, HIV/AIDS counselling and screening teams, Ayurvedic services as well as cervical cancer screening.

Representatives of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) and the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security sensitised visitors on their respective programmes and services through dedicated exhibitions.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister underscored the importance of health promotion and disease prevention in improving the quality of life of the population recalling that 20% Mauritians suffer from diabetes. He encouraged citizens to make full use of the screening and counselling services available and to adopt healthier lifestyle habits to reduce the risks of NCDs.

Minister Bachoo stressed that healthcare and disease prevention remain key on Government’s agenda while enumerating several initiatives currently being put in place. These include the setting up of Diabetes and Vascular Health Centre, Geriatric services and Trauma Centre at the level of regional hospitals to reinforce prevention through early detection.

He further pointed out that yearly around 1000 Mauritian patients receive treatment abroad and more specialised medical experts are visiting to Mauritius to perform surgeries.

Addressing concerns regarding the availability of medicines in public healthcare institutions, the Health Minister reassured the population that hospitals and health centres across the country continue to maintain adequate stocks of the majority of essential medicines while acknowledging that certain pharmaceutical products may occasionally be unavailable. He commended healthcare professionals for their hardwork in delivering quality care to patients.

Junior Minister Babooram spoke of the relevance of doing physical exercises and conducting health screening regularly as key measures in the prevention of diseases and the promotion of overall well-being.

Mr Rookny reaffirmed Government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of the population through continued campaigns in the healthcare sector.

Mauritius reaffirms commitment to SADC Regional Integration and Industrialisation Agenda

Mauritius reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional economic integration and industrialisation during the virtual 35th Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Trade (CMT) and the 25th Meeting of the Ministerial Task Force (MTF) on Regional Economic Integration of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held on 12 June 2026.

The meetings, chaired by South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Mpho Parks Franklyn Tau, brought together trade ministers and senior officials from across the region to review progress on trade, industrialisation and economic integration initiatives. Mauritius was represented by the Junior Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen.

The CMT reviewed progress in implementing the SADC Protocol on Trade, including issues related to market access, rules of origin, trade facilitation, removal of non-tariff barriers, trade in services, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and technical barriers to trade. Ministers also discussed the impact of global geopolitical developments, including the conflicts in the Middle East, the Russia-Ukraine war and unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States, on regional trade and economic growth.

During discussions on the review of the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap (SISR) 2015–2063, Mr Narsinghen welcomed the progress achieved in integrating industrialisation into regional and national policies, advancing priority value chains and strengthening regional quality infrastructure. He noted, however, that challenges such as infrastructure and energy deficits, limited industrial financing, weak SME participation in regional value chains and coordination gaps continue to hinder progress.

Mauritius supported proposals to update the industrialisation strategy to reflect emerging realities, including implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, digital transformation, climate change challenges, geopolitical developments, energy security concerns and the need for resilient supply chains. The Junior Minister highlighted that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East has heightened volatility in global energy and commodity markets, posing particular challenges for Small Island Developing States such as Mauritius that depend heavily on imported fuel and industrial inputs.

The MTF also reviewed progress under the four pillars of the SISR, namely industrialisation, competitiveness, regional integration and cross-cutting issues, and stressed the importance of strengthening intra-SADC trade and investment, fostering innovation and ensuring that regional integration contributes to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods.

Regarding the implementation of the SADC SME Development and Competitiveness Strategy 2025–2029, Mauritius underscored the critical role of small and medium enterprises in driving entrepreneurship, innovation, employment and economic diversification. Mr Narsinghen called for stronger monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, harmonised reporting frameworks and enhanced capacity-building initiatives to support SME development across the region.

Mauritius further proposed the creation of a regional SME implementation dashboard to facilitate monitoring, accountability and the exchange of best practices among Member States. The Junior Minister also informed the Task Force that consultations are underway between the SADC Secretariat and relevant Mauritian Ministries regarding the organisation of a national dissemination workshop on the SADC SME Development and Competitiveness Strategy in the coming months.

Mauritius reiterated its readiness to work closely with fellow Member States and the SADC Secretariat to promote a more prosperous, industrialised and resilient Southern African region through deeper regional cooperation and economic integration.

Mauritius hosts 23rd Automatic Exchange of Information Peer Review Group Meeting

Mauritius, through the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), is hosting the 23rd Automatic Exchange of Information Peer Review Group (APRG) Meeting from 15 to 18 June 2026, in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In this context, an official opening ceremony was held this morning at the Integrated Customs Clearance Centre (ICCC), Le Chaland Road in Plaine Magnien.

This four-day forum brings together 90 international delegates from 30-member countries, alongside virtual global assessors. The hosting of this high-level international meeting reflects Mauritius’ continued engagement and commitment towards international tax transparency standards, and reinforces the country’s standing within the Global Forum framework.

The Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry; the Director-General of the MRA, Mr Rohit Ramnawaz; the Acting Head of Division, Monitoring & Peer Review, Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes, Mr Radhanath Housden; the Vice-Chair of APRG, Ms Annu Anand; as well as other personalities were present at the opening ceremony. The Head of Global Forum Secretariat, Ms Maria José Garde, also attended via Zoom.

In his address, Junior Minister Damry highlighted that the MRA plays an important role in Mauritius as it contributes more than 90% to the Consolidated Fund, which then funds the National Budget. Speaking about the financial sector, he emphasised that digital finance is changing at a rapid pace and there is a need to constantly adapt so as to remain competitive as a country.

Moreover, he stated that Mauritius is now evolving into a derisking financial centre. In this regard, he emphasized that information exchange and peer reviews are critical mechanisms for achieving the country's objectives. He also reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to peer review processes, the adoption of international best practices, and ensuring that the financial sector serves the needs of all citizens.

For his part, MRA’s Director-General underlined Government's commitment to upholding international standards, promoting transparency and reinforcing cooperation among jurisdictions. He underscored that international cooperation in tax matters has significantly evolved during the past decade and the exchange of information mechanism transformed the way jurisdictions work together to combat tax evasion and illicit financial gains.

Mr Ramnawaz called on all stakeholders to strengthen their collaboration to ensure that taxpayers meet their obligations in the appropriate jurisdictions and that tax systems remain fair, transparent, and effective. According to him, the hosting of the 23rd APRG Meeting reflects Mauritius’ continued engagement to the international tax community and its firm commitment to supporting the work of the Global Forum.

As for Ms Garde, she commended all assessors and representatives of assessed jurisdiction for participating in this forum. She called upon them to actively contribute in the discussions concerning more than 20 jurisdictions reports.

Ms Anand, for her part, observed that Mauritius has hosted a number of global forums during past years. She pointed out that this forum is an important milestone for the APRG.

The APRG is a body established under the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes to oversee peer reviews relating to the implementation of the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) Standard. The APRG is responsible for assessing whether jurisdictions have implemented the required legal and operational frameworks for the effective exchange of financial account information in line with international standards.

It was recently established to continue the work previously undertaken by the AEOI Group. Its principal functions include: reviewing the legal frameworks of Global Forum members that have committed to implement the AEOI Standard; assessing whether participating jurisdictions have enacted the necessary domestic legislation; and evaluating the effective implementation of the AEOI Standard in practice.

International Day of the African Child commemorated with renewed pledge to protect children's rights

The International Day of the African Child, observed annually on 16 June, was marked during a commemorative event organised by the National Children’s Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, today, at La Marie Water Treatment Plant, in Vacoas. The Day renews the Government’s pledge to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have equal access to education and fundamental rights.

The Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mr Jean Daniel Philippe Labonne; and the Ombudsperson for Children, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah, were among the main attendees.

The theme chosen by the African Union is “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa”. An exhibition was also organised on the local theme “Zanfan Moris: Akter kle dan proteksion dilo ek lanvironman”, aimed at empowering children to become agents of change in addressing climate-related challenges and promoting environmental stewardship.

Some 40 students from Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo Government school; Rose Belle North Government School; Renganaden Seeneevassen State Secondary School; and Ebène State Secondary School participating in the exhibition were awarded prizes on that occasion.

Addressing the students, Mr Labonne highlighted the historical significance of the Day, which was established in memory of the Soweto Uprising of 1976, when black students in Soweto, South Africa, protested against inferior education systems under apartheid. He noted that the Day serves as a tribute to the courage and resilience of children and provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved in advancing and protecting children's rights across the African continent.

Government, he emphasised, remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of every child by ensuring access to quality education, protection from all forms of violence, and equal opportunities that enable children to realise their full potential. He further urged children to play a meaningful role in the preservation of water resources, the protection of the environment, and the promotion of sustainable development, particularly in the context of climate change.

Mr Labonne also highlighted that children have the capacity to influence positive change within their communities and can serve as ambassadors for the responsible management of natural resources, thereby contributing to the creation of a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient Mauritius.

He indicated that voluntary donors account for 87.7% of the country’s blood supply. “In 2025, some 51,454 units of blood were collected from 33,370 registered voluntary blood donors,” he stated.

On that score, Mr Bachoo extended his gratitude to all blood donors whose willingness to donate voluntarily, without expecting anything in return, represents one of the finest expressions of humanity, solidarity and civic responsibility. He paid tribute as well to the dedicated personnel of the National Blood Transfusion Service, whose expertise, vigilance and commitment ensure that the collected blood meets the highest standard of safety and quality.

The Minister appealed to young people to consider becoming regular blood donors particularly in light of the country’s changing demographic profile. He affirmed that Mauritius requires an average of 140 to 150 units of blood daily to meet national healthcare needs, including emergencies, planned surgical procedures, trauma care, obstetric emergencies, cancer treatment, and the management of conditions such as thalassaemia, haemophilia and severe anaemia, among other critical medical needs.

Agro-Industry: Budget priorities to strengthen food security and economic resilience

Key priorities for the forthcoming national budget, including food security, agricultural modernisation, and the sustainable development of the blue economy, were outlined by the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, during a press conference held today in Port Louis against the backdrop of global economic challenges. The Junior Minister, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, as well as chairpersons and representatives of parastatal bodies operating under the aegis of the Ministry were present.

Dr Boolell emphasised that Government will come up with bold and forward-looking budget measures aimed at securing long-term gains for the country, reinforcing food security, strengthening economic resilience and creating new opportunities in the agro-industrial and blue economy sectors.

Government, he mentioned, is also fast-tracking renewable energy initiatives, with a target of generating 20 percent of energy from biomass as part of the transition from coal. New forestry and wetland legislation are being prepared to strengthen environmental protection.

Dr Boolell reaffirmed Mauritius’ commitment to unlocking the potential of its Exclusive Economic Zone, including the Saya de Malha Bank, while pursuing the modernisation of port infrastructure.

Addressing labour shortages, he announced the recruitment of foreign workers from Nepal, India and Madagascar adding that 300 workers are expected in the coming days.

Referring to external economic pressures, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the imposition of a 15 percent United States tariff, Dr Boolell stressed the need to safeguard Mauritius’ interests as a Small Island Developing State.

Minister Boolell also expressed concern over the United Kingdom’s decision to grant duty-free tuna access to all exporting countries, indicating that the measure could undermine Mauritius’ longstanding competitive advantage and adversely affect the local tuna industry, which generates nearly Rs 14 billion annually.

Domestic Abuse Bill to strengthen legal protection framework in Mauritius

In a significant step towards strengthening the national framework for the protection of victims of abuse, Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of the Domestic Abuse Bill into the National Assembly. The main object of the Bill is to repeal the Protection from Domestic Violence Act and re-enact a more comprehensive and responsive legislative framework.

The Bill has been developed to address the evolving and increasingly complex forms of domestic abuse, ensuring that the legal system responds more effectively to the needs of victims. It seeks to widen the definition of domestic abuse to include, among others, economic, emotional and psychological abuse.

It further aims to enhance the protection and safety of victims and their children, prevent and reduce acts of domestic abuse to the greatest extent possible, while ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

To achieve these objectives, the Bill makes provisions for an effective and more accessible judicial system for domestic abuse orders; improved information-sharing among relevant stakeholders to assess, manage and prevent the risk of domestic abuse; the introduction of rehabilitation programmes for perpetrators; and the creation of offences for contraventions of domestic abuse orders.

Cabinet has also taken note that the Attorney-General’s Office is working on amendments to the Criminal Code to include Femicide and Marital Rape as offences under the Act.

Diabetes and Vascular Centre inaugurated at Floreal Mediclinic

A new Diabetes and Vascular Centre was inaugurated yesterday at Floreal Mediclinic, marking a significant step towards enhancing specialised healthcare services for patients living with diabetes and vascular diseases in Mauritius.

The opening ceremony was held in presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo. The Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea as well as other personalities were present.

The Centre has been established to provide comprehensive and integrated care through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of diabetes and vascular conditions. The initiative aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications associated with non-communicable diseases.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo recalled that provisions had been made in the Budget 2024–2025 for the establishment of specialised diabetes centres across the regional hospitals in Mauritius. He highlighted that diabetes remains a major public health concern, affecting approximately 20 per cent of the population. He further noted that around 700 amputations are performed annually due to diabetes-related complications, a figure he described as alarming for a small island nation.

The Minister pointed out that three Diabetes and Vascular Centres are already operational at Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital and Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital. With the inauguration of the Floreal Mediclinic facility, the number of centres has now increased to four. He further announced that a fifth centre is expected to be inaugurated shortly in the vicinity of Rose Belle Hospital.

Minister Bachoo expressed confidence that the network of specialised centres would strengthen the management of diabetes and vascular diseases, contribute to reducing the number of amputations, and improve the quality of life of patients in Mauritius.

Minister Woochit calls for results-oriented approach to strengthen Local Governance

The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit, met today in Port Louis, with the newly elected Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor of the Municipal City Council of Port Louis, as well as the Mayors and Deputy Mayors of the Municipal Councils of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas-Phoenix. The meeting provided a platform to discuss key priorities aimed at improving municipal service delivery and enhancing the quality of life of citizens.

In a statement following the meeting, Minister Woochit described the discussions as constructive and fruitful, noting that it was his first official meeting with the newly elected municipal leaders. He underscored the importance of adopting a results-oriented approach to local governance and urged municipal administrations to focus on areas that directly impact residents on a daily basis.

Among the priorities highlighted were cleanliness, efficient refuse collection, maintenance of drains, improvement of street lighting, market management, promotion of sports and community activities, and the prompt handling of public complaints. The Minister also stressed the importance of strengthening revenue collection from municipal assets such as wedding halls, with the funds generated being reinvested in maintenance and service improvements.

Addressing the issue of street lighting, Mr Woochit pointed out that many lights in public spaces, including parks, streets, markets and gardens, are currently defective. He called for urgent repairs and the installation of additional lighting in poorly lit areas to enhance public safety and security.

The Minister further emphasised the need to improve hygiene standards and safety measures in municipal markets, particularly in food courts, while advocating for the proper upkeep of football grounds and children's playgrounds.

Mr Woochit also highlighted the importance of an effective complaints management system, stating that every complaint should be recorded, addressed and monitored. According to him, complaints provide valuable insights into shortcomings in service delivery and help identify areas requiring immediate attention.

He concluded by urging municipal leaders to work towards restoring public confidence in local government through improved service delivery, accountability and responsible management, while assuring them of the Ministry’s full support in achieving these objectives.

Mauritius commemorates Day of the African Child 2026

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Children organised a forum this morning at Dayforce, Ebene, Mauritius, to mark the Day of the African Child, observed annually on 16 June.

The celebrations for this year is focused on the theme “Ensuring universal access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for every child in Africa”, highlighting it as a fundamental right essential to children’s health, dignity and development. The event aimed to promote dialogue and awareness on children’s rights while providing a platform for young people to share their perspectives on issues affecting children across Africa.

The programme included interventions from two representatives of the Jeunes Ambassadeurs des Droits des Enfants, who shared an African youth perspective, as well as a prize-giving ceremony recognising students who participated in the sensitisation campaign “Promoting Child Rights through Mural Painting”, which encouraged creative expression on children’s rights.

The event was attended by the Permanent Delegate of Mauritius to UNESCO, Ms Marie Jasmine Toulouse-Olivier; the Ombudsperson for Children, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah; students and teachers.

In her address, Ms Toulouse-Olivier emphasised Mauritius’ dual identity as an African nation and a Small Island Developing State within UNESCO priorities. She highlighted cultural identity, particularly the promotion of Mauritian Creole as a tool for inclusion, and reaffirmed children’s rights to education, health, hygiene, housing, protection and a safe environment. She also stressed the importance of responsibility, respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society, while drawing attention to social challenges affecting young people, including substance abuse and inequality.

Mrs Ghoorah, for her part, underpinned the need to translate children’s rights into daily realities, particularly access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. She noted the challenges still faced by some children and emphasised the importance of collective action. She further highlighted the role of initiatives such as the mural painting campaign in empowering children to express their understanding of rights and strengthen awareness within schools and communities.

The Day of the African Child

The Day of the African Child is commemorated annually to honour the children of Soweto who participated in the 1976 demonstration in South Africa. It serves as a reminder of the need to continuously protect, promote, and amplify the rights and voices of children across Africa.

Waste Paper Collection and Recycling Project rolled out in schools nationwide

The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Bhagwan, urged children to become ambassadors of environmental protection and play an active role in promoting recycling habits across Mauritius.

He was speaking, this morning, at the launch of the National Waste Paper Collection and Recycling Project in Primary and Secondary Schools, held at S.K. Kanhye Government School in Goodlands. The project, which will be implemented in some 246 primary and secondary schools, is an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource.

The Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; Members of the National Assembly, Messrs Nitish Sharma Beejan and Rameshwar Etwareea; and other personalities also attended the event.

The project aims to inculcate recycling habits among children from an early age, educate them on the importance of environmental stewardship, and encourage responsible waste management practices. It builds on the successful implementation of a pilot phase last year in 22 primary and secondary schools across the country, during which students collected old books, notebooks, newspapers, and cardboard for recycling at the WeCycle plant.

In his address, Minister Bhagwan underscored that environmental protection is a shared responsibility requiring the commitment of every citizen. He pointed out that around 14 per cent of the waste disposed of at the Mare Chicose landfill consists of paper that could be recycled, and highlighted the environmental cost of paper production, noting that millions of trees are cut down worldwide each day. In this context, he called for greater efforts to reduce paper waste, promote recycling, and preserve natural resources for future generations.

Referring to the pilot project, the Minister indicated that 18.8 tonnes of paper were collected in less than a year, resulting in more than 300 trees being saved and approximately 488,000 litres of water being conserved. Encouraged by these positive outcomes, he added that the initiative has now been extended to more schools to further strengthen efforts to reduce the volume of waste sent to Mare Chicose. He also announced that new initiatives would soon be introduced to tackle plastic pollution and appealed to the population to make greater efforts to protect the environment for future generations.

For his part, Dr Gungapersad reiterated his Ministry’s support for initiatives led by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change aimed at promoting environmental protection and sustainable practices among students. He further urged students to assist their parents in maintaining cleanliness at home, stressing that such good environmental practices begin within the family and should be developed from an early age.

Health Authorities Conduct Ebola Response Drill at SSR International Airport

As part of Mauritius’ preparedness and response efforts against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), an Ebola Simulation Exercise was carried out this morning at the Arrival Terminal of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance. The exercise was organised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with Airports of Mauritius Co. Ltd (AML), Airport Terminal Operations Ltd (ATOL), and other relevant stakeholder agencies.

The exercise aimed to assess the effectiveness and responsiveness of the various agencies involved in the event of a suspected EVD case entering Mauritius. It also sought to ensure that the strict protocols currently in place remain effective under operational pressure, and to evaluate inter-agency coordination through the mobilisation of airport stakeholders, including medical personnel and security forces, for the identification, management, and isolation of any potential suspected case.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister, Mrs Anishta Babooram; the Chief Executive Officer of AML and ATOL, Mr Lormus Bundhoo; as well as other personalities attended the exercise.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo reassured that vigilance remains at the highest level with regard to EVD, while highlighting the ongoing efforts to manage cases of chikungunya, dengue, Mpox and leptospirosis in Mauritius. He further noted that a preparatory meeting had been convened ahead of the simulation exercise to identify and assess possible scenarios.

Speaking about the exercise, he indicated that three potential scenarios had been identified: the detection of a suspected infected passenger on board the aircraft, at the airport through thermal screening, or at the immigration counter. He explained that, in each case, the established protocol requires the immediate involvement of the medical officer stationed at the airport, together with officers from the sanitary division, to assess whether the individual presents symptoms consistent with EVD.

Should the individual be suspected or confirmed to have EVD, the necessary arrangements would be made for his or her transfer to the New Souillac Hospital for appropriate medical care and treatment. A quarantine facility at Riambel would also be activated to accommodate individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person, as well as those presenting partial EVD symptoms.

Minister Bachoo further emphasised that the Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with AML and ATOL, would continue to closely monitor the situation and implement all necessary measures to prevent the introduction and spread of EVD in Mauritius.

President Gokhool and PM Ramgoolam attend reception marking South Africa’s Freedom Day

‘The relationship of Mauritius and South Africa transcends politics, and is deeply rooted in the people. Through the best of times and the worst, we have stood together, guided by the enduring principles of multiculturalism and sovereign equality’.

This statement was made, yesterday, by the High Commissioner of South Africa to Mauritius, and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Dr (Mrs) Hlamalani Nelly Manzini, as she hosted a reception to mark the 32nd Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa, at the RM Garden in Trianon.

The event was graced by the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool; the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful. Toasts were exchanged in celebration of the longstanding bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra; Cabinet Ministers; Junior Ministers; members of the Diplomatic Corps and dignitaries were also present.

In her address, the High Commissioner reflected on the historic journey that led to the birth of South Africa’s Rainbow Nation, emerging from the shackles of apartheid and colonialism. She noted that the celebratory evening coincided with one of the most significant observances on the United Nations calendar—the International Day of the African Child. The day, she recalled, holds special significance for South Africa as it commemorates the contribution made by young people towards the attainment of freedom of our country.

Dr Hlamalani Nelly Manzini recalled that on 16 June 1976, students took to the streets to defy the Afrikaans Medium Decree, fighting a system deliberately designed to limit their futures, emphasising that their blood and sacrifice have nurtured the inclusive education systems of today. She highlighted that this shared democratic triumph has given rise to one of the strongest pillars of the South Africa–Mauritius bilateral relationship: the education sector.

She underscored the Government’s generous scholarship scheme for African students, which she stressed, lays a vital foundation for the realisation of Mauritius’ vision of becoming a regional education hub. As regards the African Leadership College hosted in Mauritius, she expressed conviction that it is poised to become a leading centre for nurturing future African leaders who will contribute to regional integration.

The High Commissioner also underlined that the two Nations have strengthened their economic collaboration, with an expanding presence of South African companies in Mauritius, reflecting the deep trust in the local financial ecosystem, rooted in a shared moral commitment and common values. These investments serve as a living testament to a purposeful bilateral relationship that actively drives mutual economic growth, she added.

She furthermore pointed to the principles of good governance and accountability that define the South Africa–Mauritius partnership. These shared values, she noted, have translated into tangible cooperation, with Mauritius being selected as one of the first countries to benefit from the capacity-building programme of the Auditor-General of South Africa. Beyond governance, she informed that capacity-building initiatives also extended to promoting arts and culture through close collaborations with the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture and the Mauritius Film Development Corporation.

Noting that the two countries have weathered major challenges together—including the COVID-19 pandemic—Dr Hlamalani Nelly Manzini renewed South Africa’s unflinching support for Mauritius in its ongoing pursuit of sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago.

As her five-and-a-half-year tenure as South African High Commissioner to Mauritius draws to a close, she reflected fondly on her many interactions with the Mauritian people and expressed appreciation for the strong spirit of unity that characterises the nation. Concluding her remarks, and in her capacity as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, she extended her sincere gratitude to her fellow diplomats for their unwavering support throughout her mandate.

The University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM) in collaboration with the Blood Donors Association (BDA), organised today, a motivational workshop on the “15 Pledge” Initiative for staff and students at its campus in Pointe aux Sables, to mark World Blood Donor Day and to raise awareness on voluntary regular blood donation.

This initiative forms part of the University’s efforts to encourage more individuals to become lifelong donors and promote civic responsibility among young people. A blood donation campaign will also be organised on 24 June 2026 at the University’s campus. The activity will be open to staff, students and members of the surrounding community.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director-General of the UTM, Professor (Dr) Hemant Chittoo, highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation among the youth. He emphasised that a single blood donation can save lives and paid tribute to blood donors as unsung heroes who make a vital contribution to society.

Professor Chittoo further reaffirmed the University’s commitment to initiatives that support health promotion and community engagement.

Also present at the event, the President of the BDA, Mr Dewanand Hossen, underscored the continuous need for safe and adequate blood supplies for accident victims, surgical patients, expectant mothers and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses. He appealed to students to become regular blood donors and to encourage their families and communities to participate in blood donation programmes.

Mr Hossen moreover drew attention to the challenges posed by Mauritius’ ageing population, leading to a decline in the number of active blood donors. He encouraged participants to wear the blood donor honour badge with pride.

The motivational session featured testimonies from blood donors and recipients, who shared personal experiences on the life-saving impact of blood donation.

World Blood Donor Day

The World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on 14 June, aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products while recognising the invaluable contribution of voluntary, unpaid blood donors.

The “15 Pledge” Initiative

The “15 Pledge” Initiative encourages individuals to commit to donating blood at least fifteen times during their lifetime. The pledge symbolises a sustained commitment to compassion, solidarity and service to the community. A single blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives.

Mauritius and Côte d’Ivoire explore new avenues for Trade and Investment

The enhancement of economic cooperation between the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire was at the centre of discussions during a meeting held, today, in Port Louis between the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, and a delegation from the Confédération Générale des Entreprises de Côte d'Ivoire (CGECI), led by its President and prominent representative of the Ivorian private sector, Mr Ahmed Cissé.

The delegation was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of Business Mauritius, Mr Kevin Ramkaloan; the representative of Business Mauritius on the Alliance des Patronats Francophones, Mr Philippe Espitalier-Noël; and members of the Mauritian business community.

Discussions focused on strengthening both countries’ private sector collaboration through enhanced dialogue, increased investment opportunities, knowledge-sharing and the development of strategic business partnerships. Lecture by UK experts highlights importance of multidisciplinary diabetic foot care

The necessity to have a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients with diabetes was highlighted, yesterday, during a lecture on diabetes and diabetes footcare organised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness at Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium in Réduit.

A team from the University of Leicester Hospitals NHS Trust in the United Kingdom comprising the Consultant Physician and Diabetologist, Dr Sew-Chine Marie-France Kong Yao Fah; the Consultant Podiatric Surgeon, Mr Rajesh Jogia; and the Foot Lead and Advanced Diabetes Nurse Practitioner, Ms Rachel Berrington, shared their expertise and experiences with medical practitioners, nurses and students.

The key message conveyed during the lecture was that the large global disease and economic burdens caused by diabetic foot ulcer can be considerably reduced when evidence-based treatment is implemented by healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary foot care team.

Moreover, presentations by the experts demonstrated that early management is more cost effective and resource-efficient while late management leads to longer admissions and surgery. Early referral was identified as a key factor in preventing complications, reducing amputation risk and improving outcomes.

During the lecture, experts also pointed out that off-loading, which reduces pressure from ulcers, is essential for both prevention and healing. They underlined too the crucial role of appropriate antibiotics and surgical intervention.

In her presentation, Dr Sew-Chine Marie-France Kong Yao Fah thus stressed that worldwide, diabetes-related complications result in the amputation of a lower limb every 30 seconds. She remarked that people with diabetes are over 20 times more likely to undergo lower-limb amputation than people without the condition. Dr Kong Yao Fah also explained how early interventions can slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease namely through lifestyle modifications, effective glycaemic and blood pressure control along with the appropriate use of medication.

For his part, Mr Rajesh Jogia elaborated on the importance of establishing multidisciplinary foot care teams and outlined the various specialists who should be involved in delivering patient-centred treatment. These include diabetologists and diabetes specialist nurses to address optimal glycaemic control; microbiologists and surgeons to manage infections; vascular surgeons and radiologists to address ischaemia; plaster nurses, orthotists, podiatrists and surgeons to treat Charcot arthropathy; and tissue viability nurses and podiatrist surgeons for wound management. Mr Jogia also dwelt on the surgical and non-surgical treatment options provided, including the local delivery of antibiotics to affected ulcer sites.

As for Ms Rachel Berrington, she expounded upon the National Diabetes Foot Care Audit, which enables diabetic footcare services to assess their performance against the clinical guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and benchmark themselves against peer units. She further detailed the benefits and practical application of effective off-loading techniques, which evidence shows can accelerate ulcer healing, prevent deterioration and reduce the risk of infection.

Five Electric Buses donated by China to strengthen Mauritius’ Green Public Transport Drive

A ceremony marking the signing of the handover certificate for five Higer electric buses and five charging piles donated by the Government of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius was held, today, in Port Louis.

The event was attended by the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius, Dr Huang Shifang.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Mahomed reaffirmed the Government's commitment to modernising the public transport sector and advancing sustainable mobility. He highlighted that the project, jointly financed by the Republic of Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China, constitutes an important milestone in the Mauritius' transition towards greener transportation. The initiative, he noted, forms part of broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions while improving the efficiency and quality of the public transport network.

The Minister pointed out that the five electric buses, which are now stationed at the National Transport Corporation's (NTC) Bonne Terre Depot, will contribute to the Corporation's strategy of operating a hybrid fleet comprising both electric and conventional buses. He also welcomed the technical support provided by the People’s Republic of China, including the installation of charging infrastructure and the training of 25 NTC personnel in the operation and maintenance of the vehicles.

Mr Mahomed further underscored that the project reflects the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China, as well as their shared commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.

For her part, Ambassador Huang Shifang highlighted that the donation will support the electrification of Mauritius' public bus fleet and contribute to the country's transition towards cleaner, greener and more sustainable transportation. She expressed satisfaction that the five electric buses will officially enter service tomorrow, marking a new chapter in Mauritius' public transport modernisation efforts.

Recalling her country's previous donations of conventional buses in 2016 and 2018, she noted that the introduction of electric buses reflects the two nations shared commitment to promoting environmentally friendly and low-carbon transport solutions.

The Ambassador expressed hope that the project would pave the way for deeper collaboration between the two countries in promoting a sustainable future. She also reiterated her country's continued support for Mauritius, while reaffirming appreciation for the longstanding friendship shared by both nations.

Mauritius reaffirms commitment to Agenda 2063 at national workshop

Agenda 2063 sets before us a Pan-African vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens. Mauritius is committed to playing its full part in realising that vision.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful, made this statement today, as he launched the National Workshop on the Second Ten Year Implementation Plan (STYIP) of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, in Ebène. The Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen, was also present on the occasion.

In his keynote address, Minister Dhananjay Ramful described Agenda 2063 as a whole-of-society undertaking, whose success rests as much on the Government, as on private sector partners, the academia and the civil society.

Referring to the theme of the workshop, ‘Domesticating Agenda 2063 - Mauritius’ Strategic Positioning under the Second Ten Year Implementation Plan’, the Minister dwelt on the key importance of the domestication of a continental framework. It is the step that makes delivery possible, turning a continental aspiration into a commitment our own institutions carry, he emphasised.

Moreover, he delineated three core pillars required to achieve the “Africa We Want” at national level, namely: mainstreaming of the aspirations of Agenda 2063 in the instruments of the Government; measurement of actions delivered, for better evidence and reporting; and people-driven ownership that harness the potential of the people, women and youth.

The Minister highlighted that under the First Ten-Year Implementation Plan, Mauritius' overall performance rose to 67 percent this year, building on scores of 50 percent in 2021 and 55 percent in 2023.

With regard to Agenda 2063, Mr Dhananjay Ramful underlined that Mauritius will leverage its strengths including a stable democracy, an established financial centre, and act as a bridge between Africa and the wider Indian Ocean and Asian economies.

According to him, if Africa is to be an influential global player, Small Island Developing States like Mauritius must position themselves strategically through the supply of credibility, of ideas, and of trusted ground on which others can meet.

He stressed that as Mauritius domesticates Agenda 2063, its key priorities should include the ocean economy, fintech, services trade, and active engagement in continental flagship projects.

CSU launches participatory workshop to support Rodriguan migrants in Mauritius

A one-day participatory community workshop, under the Rodriguan Internal Migrants Empowerment and Support Programme, opened, this morning, at the Youth Hub in Cité La Cure, in the presence of the Head of the Citizen Support Unit (CSU), Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Louis Girty Eleonore. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to support Rodriguan migrants living in Mauritius through practical and sustainable, community-based interventions.

The programme is being implemented by the CSU, following the publication in 2025 of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) report entitled ‘Internal Migration between the Islands of Rodrigues and Mauritius: Drivers, Challenges and Opportunities for Support’. The report identified several challenges faced by Rodriguan migrants including housing difficulties, financial insecurity, lack of information and preparedness, family separation and psychosocial distress, gender-related vulnerabilities, as well as poverty, exclusion and stigmatisation.

Building on the report’s findings, the programme seeks to strengthen the capacities, autonomy, resilience and equal opportunities of Rodriguan migrants through a participatory community development approach. It brings together Rodriguan communities, Ministries, Government departments, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to develop concrete responses to the issues identified.

Participants are invited to identify the main challenges, resources and opportunities within the identified intervention areas, with a view to developing a realistic and sustainable community action plan.

The pilot phase of the programme will be implemented in Cluster 1, which comprises several localities in the regions of Cité La Cure, Sainte Croix and Roche Bois, including Ti Rodrig, State Land Robert Scott, Marjolain and Karo Kalyptis. The cluster approach aims to facilitate community mobilisation, strengthen inter-agency coordination and support the implementation of joint actions at regional level.

In his address, Mr Eleonore emphasised that the programme seeks to move beyond awareness and sensitisation activities by promoting community participation, ownership and practical action. He highlighted the importance of developing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound) initiatives and sustainable solutions informed by both the recommendations of the IOM report and the lived experiences of Rodriguan migrants.

Mr Eleonore further pointed out that Government is committed to addressing the issues raised by Rodriguan communities through reliable and targeted interventions. He noted that priorities would be established following a thorough assessment of the challenges identified, allowing for immediate action on the most pressing concerns while laying the groundwork for longer-term solutions.
