BackMauritius Telecom Donates Equipment to Royal College Port Louis
GIS – 26 February 2026: Mauritius Telecom donated twelve electric fans and a laptop to Royal College Port Louis during a ceremony held, yesterday, in the presence of the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David; the Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom, Mr Veemal Gungadin; and other personalities. In his address, Mr David underlined that this year marks the 50 th anniversary of free secondary education, introduced under the vision of former Prime Minister, the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who recognised the importance of investing in the education of the youth. He stated that the vision for a better Mauritius remains ongoing, with the Government launching consultations for Vision 2050 to guide the country towards a pathway of prosperity, inclusiveness, sustainability and numeracy. On that score, the Junior Minister emphasised the need to move from technology consumption to technological creation by leveraging science and technology for transformative ideas and projects. He cited the example of a local start-up that has gained international recognition by using marine drones to combat marine biofouling. “This,” he said, “demonstrates Mauritian ingenuity at work, providing solutions to challenges that not only affect the structural integrity of ships and platforms, but also reduce vessel efficiency, increase fuel consumption, and accelerate corrosion, resulting in higher maintenance costs and environmental concerns.” The Junior Minister called on young people, as the future of the country and a source of hope for development, to study and work diligently and to produce the same brand of innovation. For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom spoke of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world and how its potential, like that of social media, can be effectively leveraged. He elaborated on the company’s efforts to ensure that AI usage is safe, not only for the business ecosystem but also for the education sector. According to the Chief Executive Officer, early exposure to AI will enable young people to use such tools effectively in the future. While acknowledging that AI has both advantages and drawbacks, he indicated that Mauritius Telecom is making AI safer for schools through its mytGPT Education, an AI-powered platform designed to support classroom learning. Concerning the donation of the fans and laptop, Mr Gungadin stated that this initiative will be extended to other institutions.

BackVernissage held for ‘Esclavage: Réparations et Restitution’ Exhibition at Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture
GIS – 27 February 2026: The vernissage of the exhibition ‘ Esclavage: Réparations et Restitution ’ (Slavery: Reparation and Restitution) was held, yesterday, at Lespas Lar at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture in La Tour Koenig, in the presence of the Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley; the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea; the Junior Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Kuvalayan Kugan Parapen; and other distinguished personalities. The exhibition, scheduled to run from February to March 2026, is organised by the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture in collaboration with the National Art Gallery to commemorate the 191 st Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery. The launch of the exhibition forms part of the calendar of activities marking the 40 th anniversary of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture, further reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to promoting heritage, historical memory and contemporary creation. Commemorating the abolition of slavery through art constitutes a strong and necessary act, the exhibition is conceived as a space for remembrance, dialogue and resilience, where art becomes a vehicle for transmission, awareness and collective healing. Centred on this year’s retained theme for the commemorations, ‘Justice for Africans and Peoples of African Descent through Reparations’, the exhibition invites the public to revisit a shared history, to examine the legacies of the past and to reflect on the essential notions of reparation and restitution. Through 25 works — including paintings, sculptures, installations and other contemporary forms of expression — Mauritian visual artists take a stand on the tragedy of slavery and its present-day resonances. In his address for the occasion, the Vice-President stressed that the commemoration of the abolition of slavery is not merely a calendar date, but a meeting with the collective conscience and a refusal to silence the voices of those who were once treated as objects and furniture. He commended institutions and organisations, including the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture, for this regular initiative launched in 2022, where art serves both as a cathartic experience and as a means of educating the population about slavery. Speaking on the theme of the exhibition, the Vice-President underlined that reparation and restitution go beyond material considerations and legal justice. They are also symbolic, moral and cultural acts through which the nation confronts its history. Mr Hungley noted that the process involves restoring a voice to those who were silenced and placing the human being at the heart of history. He pointed out the importance of transmitting this memory to future generations as a lever for national cohesion and a contribution to ongoing national dialogue. Moreover, the Vice-President highlighted the need to support the country’s culture and history not only through government policies but also through investment. In that regard, he referred to the Mauritius Art & Culture Investment Summit scheduled for 24 and 25 March 2026, underscoring that such initiatives can help position culture and history as an economic pillar to be further leveraged. For his part, the Minister of Arts and Culture recalled that the promotion of culture remains a government priority. “Remembering the past,” he said, “honours the ancestors for their suffering, pain, dignity, courage and resistance, all of which form part of the fabric of the nation.” Referring to the theme of the exhibition, Mr Gondeea affirmed that historical truth, justice and remembrance are essential to addressing the enduring effects of slavery and to ensuring that this legacy is transmitted to future generations. The Minister saluted too the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture for its continued endeavours in valorising African culture in Mauritius.

BackMoU signed to introduce interventional bronchoscopy services in Mauritius
GIS – 05 March 2026: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing collaboration in the field of interventional bronchoscopy was signed, this morning, in Ebène, between the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and the Société de Pneumologie de l’Océan Indien Foundation under La F ondation de l’Académie de Médecine . The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Mrs Anishta Babooram; and other high officials. The Acting Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mr Parmanand Mawah, and the Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Head of Experimental Medicine Studies at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, Professor Kian Fan Chung, signed the agreement. In a statement, Minister Bachoo reiterated Government’s commitment to modernising hospital services, strengthening specialised medicine and ensuring that the population has access to higher quality and more advanced medical care. Mr Bachoo affirmed that the collaboration is in line with Government’s vision of positioning Mauritius as a centre for medical excellence and regional cooperation in health care in the Indian Ocean. According to the Minister, the MoU marks an important step in strengthening specialised health care services in Mauritius by enabling the introduction of interventional pulmonology. “This branch of medicine,” he explained, “is essential for the diagnosis, treatment and management of lung and chest conditions through minimally invasive procedures that are not yet available in Mauritius.” He indicated that t hrough this partnership, hospitals in Mauritius will be able to perform specialised procedures that previously required patients to travel abroad. Moreover, the Minister pointed out that the programme will be implemented progressively over the coming years to ensure that local medical teams receive the necessary training and that the services are delivered safely and effectively. An interventional bronchoscopy unit will be set up at Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital in Flacq as part of the initiative. Some 100 patients suffering from complex lung conditions are expected to benefit from these advanced procedures. Minister Bachoo further underlined that a key strength of the project lies in its strong focus on training and capacity building. Mauritian doctors and nurses will receive specialised training so that the expertise remains within the local health system while international experts from France and the region will support the Mauritian team during the initial stages and assist in transferring valuable knowledge. For his part, Professor Kian Fan Chung observed that respiratory medicine has witnessed significant progress over the past decades and underscored the need for Mauritius to advance in this medical field by offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures. He underscored the importance of interventional bronchoscopy in increasing diagnostic capacity and improving the treatment of cancers and other respiratory diseases. Professor Chung also dwelt on the role of the Société de Pneumologie de l’Océan Indien Foundation in promoting cutting-edge knowledge through training and medical cooperation among countries of the Indian Ocean region.

BackGovernment activates contingency measures as Middle East conflict threatens economic stability
GIS – 17 March 2026: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today cautioned that the escalating conflict in the Middle East poses significant risks to Mauritius’ economic stability, while reassuring the population that Government has already activated a comprehensive response framework to safeguard citizens, secure essential supplies and cushion the economy against external shocks. Replying to a Private Notice Question in the National Assembly, the Prime Minister described the situation as a “global turmoil” with potentially “devastating economic repercussions” for small, import-dependent economies such as Mauritius. Dr Ramgoolam underlined that he has been personally monitoring developments since the outbreak of hostilities and has been in continuous contact with both local ministries and international partners to coordinate timely interventions. A key immediate priority, he said, is the safety of Mauritian nationals stranded in the affected regions. Government moved swiftly to facilitate repatriation, engaging international airline operators and mobilising diplomatic missions. Through coordinated efforts involving Mauritius’ missions in Riyadh and Islamabad, as well as its Consulate in Dubai, some 228 Mauritians were assisted via a dedicated hotline. Of these, the majority have already returned home through commercial and special flight arrangements, including additional flights secured on the Dubai–Mauritius route. Dr Ramgoolam pointed out that diplomatic channels were also leveraged to assist Mauritians in more complex situations, including evacuations from Iran and Israel, with support from partner countries. He reaffirmed Mauritius’ call for de-escalation and peaceful dialogue, aligning with positions expressed by major international organisations. With regard to the economic impact, Dr Ramgoolam recalled that Mauritius remains highly exposed due to its reliance on imported fuel and food. He listed out soaring import costs, increased freight and insurance charges, and potential declines in tourism and investment as the main transmission channels of the crisis. According to assessments by the Macroeconomic Coordination Committee, GDP growth for 2026—initially projected at 3.4%—could fall to around 3.2% if the conflict is short-lived, and below 3% in the event of a prolonged crisis. Inflation, initially forecast at 4%, could rise to as high as 6%, driven largely by surging global oil and commodity prices. Tourist arrivals are also expected to drop below earlier projections of 1.45 million, while the current account deficit could widen to around 6% of GDP. Public finances are likewise expected to come under strain, with lower revenues anticipated due to subdued consumption and tourism activity, compounded by a projected Rs 10 billion shortfall linked to delays in the Chagos agreement. The budget deficit, the Prime Minister indicated, could increase by up to 2% of GDP. In a bid to address these challenges, a High-Level Committee chaired by the Financial Secretary has been established, bringing together key public institutions and private sector representatives. The committee, said Dr Ramgoolam, is tasked with closely monitoring developments, coordinating policy responses and identifying both risks and opportunities arising from the crisis. Regular working sessions are being held to support small and medium enterprises, strengthen supply chains, enhance food and energy security, and sustain the tourism sector. On the energy front, the Prime Minister provided detailed assurances regarding fuel availability, noting that Mauritius currently maintains sufficient stocks of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ranging from approximately two to three weeks of supply. Additional shipments are scheduled to arrive in the coming days and weeks to replenish reserves, he added. Despite a sharp rise in global oil prices—from around USD 60 to USD 100 per barrel—Government has so far maintained stable retail prices locally. Contingency plans are also in place, including securing alternative suppliers and exploring Government-to-Government procurement arrangements, notably with India, to reduce reliance on intermediaries and ensure long-term supply security. With regard to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), used widely for cooking, current stocks stand at about 23 days of supply, with further shipments already scheduled. Authorities have also diversified sourcing channels to minimise exposure to disruptions in the Middle East. Food security remains another central concern, said the Prime Minister. On that score, he indicated that global commodity prices have already risen by up to 3%, compounded by currency fluctuations. In response, Government is maintaining strict price controls on a wide range of essential goods and continues to support consumers through a Rs 10 billion Price Stabilisation Fund, which subsidises key items such as milk powder, edible oil and basic foodstuffs. In the health sector, a buffer stock of medicines sufficient for at least six months has been secured, alongside the establishment of a dedicated committee to monitor nationwide supply levels. Dr Ramgoolam stressed that Government’s approach encompasses short-, medium- and long-term measures aimed not only at managing the immediate crisis but also at strengthening the country’s resilience to external shocks. Targeted interventions by the Bank of Mauritius are helping to stabilise the currency and additional flights by Air Mauritius are being deployed to sustain connectivity and tourism flows, he said. Concluding his statement, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the evolving situation would inevitably affect budgetary forecasts and limit fiscal space. “Government stands ready to respond swiftly and adjust its policy stance so as to preserve macroeconomic stability, sustain growth and protect the purchasing power of Mauritians,” he added.

BackMauritius Becomes First African Nation to adhere to IMF’s SDDS Plus
GIS – 18 March 2026: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, announced that Mauritius has officially adhered to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) Plus as of yesterday. Mauritius is the first country in Africa and the 32 nd country globally to achieve the SDDS Plus milestone - the IMF’s highest tier of data dissemination standards, widely recognised as the most advanced and rigorous among all international data benchmarks. In a statement delivered on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, at the National Assembly, the Prime Minister emphasised that Mauritius’ graduation to SDDS Plus is a significant achievement, noting that only 31 countries worldwide have met this standard, the majority being OECD or high-income nations. “Through this achievement, we now stand alongside advanced countries, particularly in terms of the transparency, credibility and integrity of our official statistics”, he said. The Prime Minister likewise reiterated the Government’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the production and dissemination of statistics. In a global environment of heightened scrutiny and interconnected risks, Dr Ramgoolam underscored that adherence to SDDS Plus provides Mauritius with a strong institutional signal of commitment to the highest standards of macro-financial transparency. According to him, the SDDS Plus is not merely a statistical benchmark but a strategic instrument, sending a clear message to investors, rating agencies, and international partners that Mauritius’ statistics can be relied upon for informed decision-making. The Prime Minister also recalled the establishment of a steering committee to oversee SDDS Plus implementation and expressed appreciation to the IMF for its continued support in helping Mauritius achieve this milestone. “The adherence to the SDDS Plus means that we are agreeing to publish more data, faster, and with tighter guarantees on quality, integrity and openness, especially for government finance, the financial system, and external exposures”, he stated while adding that “in practice, the SDDS Plus requires Mauritius to meet detailed IMF benchmarks on the coverage, frequency, and timeliness of a set of core and additional datasets that are considered essential to monitor vulnerabilities and risks in modern economies”. Dr Ramgoolam highlighted that Mauritius’ graduation to SDDS Plus is more than symbolic, bringing concrete economic benefits. It reinforces the country’s international credibility; boosts investor and rating agency confidence; and strengthens financial stability oversight. The achievement aligns with Mauritius’ ambitions as a global financial centre, enhances institutional governance, and facilitates more efficient access to international markets.

This itinerant photo exhibition, organised by the Media Trust in commemoration of the National Day celebrations this year, is a photographic tribute to the men, women, and children who embody the spirit of Mauritius. Through the lenses of local photojournalists, the exhibition captures everyday moments shaped by history, labour, resilience, joy, and hope; each face telling a story beyond words. BackTheatre play ‘Mamzel’ Spotlights Women’s Struggles
GIS – 18 March 2026: As part of the activities commemorating International Women ’ s Day, celebrated annually on 8 March, the theatre play ‘ Mamzel', written by Mr Thierry Fran ç oise, was presented this morning at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation, in Réduit. Organised by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, the event brought together artists from Mauritius, Réunion Island, and Madagascar. The play addressed the challenges women face, and explored themes such as faith, family, and internal struggles, and raised public awareness and encouraged reflection on the societal pressures women encounter. The event was attended by the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah, and other personalities. In her address, the Gender Equality Minister paid tribute to all women who have contributed to the nation’s development, while offering special thoughts for those who lost their lives due to domestic violence. She emphasised the importance of acknowledging the daily struggles women endure in a society still largely dominated by men, noting how often their voices are silenced. Mrs Navarre-Marie further underlined that the presentation forms part of a broader effort to harness culture and the arts as instruments for dialogue and social transformation, using creative expression to raise awareness of societal issues. By combining artistic performance with social commentary, the play encourages audiences to reflect on women’s realities and the pressures they encounter, she added. The Minister expressed hope that the audience would leave the performance with a renewed understanding of these challenges, appreciating the crucial role of art and theatre in giving women a voice. She recalled that such cultural initiatives not only foster dialogue but also inspire societal change, enabling audiences to engage with critical issues in a meaningful way. For his part, Minister Pentiah condemned all acts of violence against women, girls, and mothers, highlighting the emotional and social impact on affected families. He also drew attention to the significant yet often overlooked role of women in both household and professional life, stating that their contributions are vital to the stability and progress of society. Mr Pentiah called on each and every individual to recognise, respect, and support women. Fostering a culture of care, protection, and mutual respect is essential for the well-being of families and the wider community, he added.

BackInauguration of Trauma and Emergency Unit at SAJ Hospital to strengthen emergency medical services
GIS – 18 March 2026: The Trauma and Emergency Unit at the Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital will become operational on 23 March 2026. This specialised facility is designed to provide rapid and high-quality care in emergency situations. The inauguration ceremony was held today in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; Members of the National Assembly, Messers Raviraj Beechook, and Avinash Ramkalawon; Regional Health Director at SAJ Hospital, Dr Sookmanee; and Acting Director Emergency Services, Dr Bosoondyal . In his address, Minister Bachoo emphasised that the Trauma and Emergency Unit forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at transforming emergency medical care in Mauritius. He highlighted Government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system by ensuring the provision of timely, efficient, and high-quality emergency services. He further underscored the importance of modern infrastructure, specialised medical teams and well-established critical care protocols. He reiterated that Mauritius is striving to align its emergency medical services with international standards, ensuring that public healthcare delivery keeps pace with global best practices. The Minister indicated that emergency situations such as heart attacks and strokes require rapid decision-making, coordinated teamwork and immediate life-saving interventions. It is thus essential to ensure adequate infrastructure and well-trained medical personnel to enhance patient safety as well as improve the efficiency and responsiveness of emergency medical services in Mauritius, he said. He highlighted that the new Unit incorporates a modern triage system based on internationally recognised colour codes (Red, Yellow, and Green). This system enables immediate patient assessment and prioritisation according to the severity of their condition rather than order of arrival. Similar Trauma and Emergency Units will be progressively established in other regional hospitals across the island, added Minister Bachoo.

BackGovernment mobilised to safeguard Mauritius’ standing as a trusted IFC
GIS – 18 March 2026: Government, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders are fully mobilised to uphold the highest standards of compliance and governance, and to reinforce the credibility and global standing of Mauritius as a trusted International Financial Centre (IFC), stated the Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun. She was speaking today at the 53 rd Annual General Meeting of the Insurers Association of Mauritius (IAM), held at the Hennessy Park Hotel in Ebène. The Chairperson of IAM, Mr Naresh Gokulsing; the Secretary General of IAM, Mr Vashish Ramkhalawon; and key stakeholders of the insurance industry, were also present. In her address, Dr Jeetun underscored that safeguarding the reputation and integrity of Mauritius’ financial sector remains non-negotiable with the Mutual Evaluation coming up in 2027. She highlighted the growing global uncertainty, noting that existing pressures from climate change, trade tensions, and geopolitical fragmentation have been exacerbated by heightened regional volatility linked to the war in Iran and the broader Middle East situation. In this context, she stressed the urgent need to strengthen the resilience and future readiness of the insurance sector. The Minister recalled that the insurance sector remains a key pillar of the Mauritian economy, contributing approximately 1.6% to GDP and employing around 3,000 people. While the sector recorded a solid growth of about 7% in 2025, she noted that the ongoing conflict in Iran is reshaping the economic outlook and presenting new challenges. Dr Jeetun also outlined strategic avenues to further boost the sector including regional expansion and the development of innovative insurance products to address emerging risks, which can unlock new growth opportunities. She emphasised that building a more sophisticated insurance ecosystem supported by a highly skilled workforce is essential to ensuring long-term resilience. In this regard, she emphasised the importance of continuous training and upskilling, highlighting the role of the Financial Services Institute in addressing skills gaps and supporting the sector’s evolution. The Minister further underlined the significance of the financial services and insurance sector within the ongoing Vision 2050 consultations. She reaffirmed that Mauritius must continue to position itself as a competitive International Financial Centre by deepening its financial offerings, leveraging technological innovation, and expanding into regional markets, particularly in Africa and Asia. She reiterated the Government’s full support to the insurance industry in building a strong and sustainable sector. IAM’s Chairperson, for his part, called for accelerated adoption of technology and innovation to further strengthen the industry. He reaffirmed IAM’s commitment in fostering an insurance industry that plays an even greater role in driving national development while safeguarding the country’s social fabric.

BackOffice of Ombudsperson for Children calls for unified action to protect child victims
GIS – 18 March 2026: A panel discussion focusing on the theme ‘Safeguarding the Rights of Child Victims of Sexual Abuse: Strengthening the Chain of Protection’, organised by the Office of Ombudsperson for Children, opened this morning in Quatre-Bornes. In her address, the Ombudsperson for Children, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah, recalled that every child has to grow in dignity, within a safe environment free from violence and exploitation. According to her, sexual abuse of children constitutes one of the most serious violations of a child's rights and dignity, which she emphasised, leaves deep and lasting wounds affecting his physical and emotional well-being, development, sense of security, and trust in the society. She underpinned the key role of institutions intervening in such cases and their responsibility in protecting and supporting the victims. “We should all have a collective engagement and passion to protect children who are victims of abuse and surround them with a supportive environment whereby they feel safe to talk and ask for help”, she stated. Moreover, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah highlighted the need for a strong chain of protection for these victims so that they benefit from help assistance throughout the whole process to justice. To strengthen the chain of protection, she pointed out, enhancing coordination, communication and trust among institutions are crucial. Clearer procedures, adapted approaches to children, adequate professional training and services and support mechanisms that enable prompt and effective responses are equally important, she added. She thus qualified the panel discussion as an opportune meeting for the concerned institutions to share their knowledge, experience, expertise, identity challenges and chart the way forward for a more coordinated and collective approach.
