Biodiversity restoration: New micro-forest at Grand Baie marks 30th site across Mauritius

The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Anand Bhagwan, participated in a micro-forest planting activity alongside volunteers and environmental partners, on Saturday 23 May 2026, at the courtyard of Notre Dame de la Salette Church in Grand Baie.

The initiative was led by Action for Environment Protection and Tiny Forest Mauritius as part of their ongoing commitment to expand micro-forest development across Mauritius.

At the Grand Baie site, around 300 endemic and indigenous plants, including Trochetia, Palmiste, Mauritius lily, Bois de Chandelle and other native species, were planted.

The activity marked the establishment of the 30th micro-forest across 18 sites in Mauritius. In total, the project covers 4,277 m² and features 12,925 plants from 119 endemic and indigenous species. Additionally, Rodrigues now hosts three micro-forests spanning 269 m², with 804 plants from 38 endemic and indigenous species.

Focused on tackling climate change and biodiversity loss, the micro-forest initiative requires at least two years of dedicated maintenance to ensure healthy growth and protection from invasive species. With 30 sites already established, the project plays a vital role in restoring and preserving Mauritius’ natural heritage.
