Former NASA Deputy Chief Technologist discusses Artemis Accords with Prime Minister
The Former Deputy
Chief Technologist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),
Mr Jim Adams, met the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon
at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis.
Mr Adams is currently on visit to Mauritius as part of the U.S. State Department’s U.S. Speaker Programme, “Freedom250: Artemis and U.S. Leadership in Space Innovation,” commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence.
In a statement, Mr Adams underlined that discussions with the Prime Minister centred on the Artemis Accords, which he explained are a set of non-binding rules of behaviour for nations that want to explore the moon. He added that these series of agreements govern behaviours in space such as limiting debris making and rescue missions.
The Former NASA Deputy Chief Technologist emphasised that Prime Minister Ramgoolam was open to the idea of signing the Accords, which would make Mauritius the 68th signatory. “This will allow Mauritius to sit alongside other signatory nations to shape lunar policies for the coming decades”, he remarked.
He moreover highlighted that by signing the Artemis Accords, Mauritius will demonstrate interest in the utilisation of the space, adding that it will enable the country create a network in the long run and leverage satellite technology to do better things on Earth such as gaining a deeper understanding of fisheries, climate change and better track cyclones.
