International Day for Biological Diversity marked by tree planting ceremony
A tree planting ceremony to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity was held, this afternoon, in presence of the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, Mr Fabrice David, at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses. The theme retained for this year is “Acting locally for global impact”.
Observed annually on 22 May, the Day aims to raise awareness and promote action to protect the planet's ecosystems. It also commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity on 22 May 1992.
Additionally, ten rare fruit trees were planted in the garden as a symbolic gesture to encourage greater public commitment towards environmental protection and the preservation of biological diversity, which remains an integral part of the country’s natural heritage and landscape.
Earlier in the day, members of the public benefitted from a sale of rare plants and trees organised by the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden.
