Minister Boolell visits sugarcane rehabilitation site at Petit Camp
A site visit to take cognisance of the rehabilitation works being undertaken for the replanting of abandoned sugarcane lands located at Petit Camp was conducted this morning by the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, and the Chief Government Whip, Mrs Marie Geneviève Stéphanie Anquetil.
The Sugarcane Block rehabilitation project at Petit Camp is a project initiated by the Petit Camp Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd in partnership with the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority (MCIA).
In a statement, Minister Boolell underlined that the project is aligned with Government’s aim of rehabilitating some 8,000 arpents of land that have been left abandoned by planters. He remarked that land sustains life and provides food for our survival, underscoring Government's commitment to ensuring its optimal use.
He commended the endeavour of the Petit Camp Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd for teaming up with the MCIA on a three-year plan to rehabilitate some 190 arpents of land. On that score, he highlighted that agricultural cooperatives continue to benefit from support schemes, facilities, and assistance provided by Governmental bodies like the MCIA.
The Minister pointed out that the project will also explore the intercropping of potatoes in the sugarcane fields.
Furthermore, Dr Boolell outlined the Ministry’s agenda to advance precision and smart agriculture, while promoting land sustainability practices for long-term agricultural productivity and ecological health.
