Consumer Price Index and Inflation: Workshop deepens understanding of economic indicators

A half-day workshop on Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation, focusing on the theme, “Understanding CPI and Inflation for Better Insights”, was held this morning at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Réduit.

Organised by Statistics Mauritius under its Statistical Literacy Programme, the initiative brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors as well as representatives of the Statistics Board, Trade Unions and the academia, to deepen their understanding of key economic indicators.

Present on the occasion, the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr John Michaël Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen, highlighted that the CPI serves as a key measure of how global economic developments affect the daily lives of Mauritians. He noted that rising freight charges, geopolitical tensions and climate-related disruptions are some of the factors contributing to inflationary pressures worldwide and influencing local consumer prices.

Elaborating on the importance of reliable data, the Minister pointed out that statistics produced by Statistics Mauritius support evidence-based decisions in areas such as price monitoring, subsidy management and consumer protection. He further stressed that a better understanding of how inflation is calculated would help promote transparency and encourage more informed public discussions on economic matters.

For his part, the Director of Statistics, Mr Mukesh Dawoonauth, stated that the objective of the workshop was to provide participants with the opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of how inflation figures and CPI are compiled, interpreted and applied across different sectors. He emphasised that these indicators remain essential tools for institutions involved in economic planning, wage negotiations and the formulation of public policies.

The workshop

Designed to strengthen statistical literacy, the session focused on explaining the methodology used in the compilation of the CPI and the measurement of inflation. Participants were also provided with insights into the importance of the Household Budget Survey in updating basket weights and analysing household expenditure and consumption trends.
