She also received several gifts including a shield, bath towel, hand towel and birthday card from the Senior Citizens Council as well as a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund.
Life history of the new centenarian
Born on 16 May 1926, Mrs Cotte was raised in Port Louis in a modest family comprising three daughters and one son. She pursued her studies up to Standard six and later worked as a salesgirl and dressmaker at HMS boutique in Quatre Bornes.
At the age of 22, she moved to Rose Hill and married Mr Cotte Louis Joseph on 17 August 1953. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Vacoas for around fifteen years before settling permanently in Eau Coulée. Her husband, who was a shoemaker, passed away in 1993. The couple did not have any children.
The centenarian has always enjoyed sewing and dressmaking. She also enjoys traditional Mauritian cuisine, especially chicken curry and carrot salad. One of her cherished memories remains her visit to Italy and the Vatican around thirty years ago.
She attributes her longevity to hard work, a hygienic lifestyle and unconditional faith in God.
