Mauritius to benefit from Korea Customs Service’s expertise to strengthen risk management systems

The collaboration between Mauritius and the Korea Customs Service to strengthen risk management systems and integrating advanced technologies for monitoring parcels entering the country due to the rise of e-commerce was at the fore of discussions during a meeting held today in Port Louis between the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, and a delegation from the Korea Customs Service.

The Korean delegation was accompanied by the Director General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), Rohit Ramnawaz.

In a statement following the meeting, Junior Minister Damry highlighted that Government’s vision is to digitalise services to improve effectiveness and efficiency, while managing the growing risks linked to drug trafficking and illicit products.

He pointed out that between 4,000 to 5,000 parcels transit through Mauritian territory every day, thus posing a major challenge for MRA’s Customs division in detecting drugs and illicit products. He also seized the opportunity to commend the work already undertaken by the MRA in combating illicit trafficking and risk management, as evidenced by the major seizures regularly carried out by Customs Officials at the airport and the port.

As for Mr Ramnawaz, he emphasised the need to anticipate new forms of crime linked to the increase in online shopping and parcel volumes. He observed that the MRA is already working on advanced scanning systems to more effectively detect drugs, weapons and other illicit products.

The collaboration with the Korea Customs Service will enable Mauritian authorities to take proactive measures to address the issue of drug and illicit products trafficking linked to online shopping and the increase in parcels volume entering the country.
