India Corner at the Simone de Beauvoir Library to encourage intellectual and cultural enrichment

The India Corner set up at the Simone de Beauvoir Library at the Municipal Council of Quatre-Bornes through a joint venture between the Municipal Council of Quatre-Bornes and the High Commission of India to Mauritius, was inaugurated on 13 May 2026.

Several personalities were present at the ceremony, namely: the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; the Mayor of the Municipal Council of Quatre-Bornes, Mr Bryan Rudy Kennoo; the Chief Government Whip, Mrs Marie Geneviève Stéphanie Anquetil; and the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs Aparna Ganesan.

On the occasion, some 200 books were donated by the Indian High Commission to the Simone de Beauvoir Library.

In his address, the Mayor hailed the new India Corner as an important milestone in the town library’s ongoing evolution. He reflected on how the institution continues to serve as a sanctuary of knowledge, where generations have nurtured their minds and broadened their horizons.

“Many who once occupied these reading sections have gone on to become distinguished professionals, educators, public servants and respected members of society, carrying forward the knowledge and values acquired within these walls”, he remarked.

Mr Kennoo further thanked the High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava, for his valued contribution to the promotion of culture, knowledge and the longstanding friendship between Mauritius and India.

He called the India Corner far more than a book collection, describing it as a bridge between cultures, a window into India’s rich heritage, literature, philosophy and history, and a valuable resource for students, researchers and the public. According to him, the India Corner will undoubtedly contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the community.

The Mayor also underscored the longstanding collaboration between the Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes and the High Commission of India, citing the development of the green space at Gungadur Lane, which was realised through a grant from the Government of India.

Furthermore, the Mayor elaborated on the longstanding bonds between Mauritius and India, and how India has remained a steadfast partner in Mauritius’ development through cooperation in education, infrastructure, healthcare, technology and social initiatives.
