Students rewarded after completing HRDC School Placement Programme
A
total of 729 secondary school students who successfully completed a two-week
work placement under the Human Resource Development Council’s School Placement
Programme (SPP), received their certificates and shields today in presence of
the Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad, at the
Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka.
Addressing the students, Minister Gungapersad reiterated Government’s commitment to making optimal use of the country’s resources, particularly human resources. He highlighted that the Government Programme 2025–2029 includes strategies aimed at addressing skills mismatches and labour shortages within the economy.
He noted that the HRDC regularly conducts national and sectoral skills studies to better align education and training with labour market needs. The education, skilling and training systems, he observed, are being restructured to better prepare young people for the workplace. Through the SPP, he said, students were exposed to workplace values, principles and responsibilities, helping them adapt to professional environments.
Dr Gungapersad also expressed satisfaction that students from 61 schools were placed in 45 organisations across both the public and private sectors during November and December 2025. The placements enabled participants to gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of workplace culture, he stated, urging more youth to benefit from the SPP.
Also present at the event, the Chairperson of the HRDC, Mr Bhooyasheel Akshay Seedoyal, underlined that the SPP is a key initiative to preparing young learners for the world of work. It bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical skills, providing students with valuable exposure to real-life professional environments. The initiative, he added, reaffirms the HRDC’s commitment to empowering young people with tools they for future success.
HRDC School Placement Programme
The SPP is an initiative of the HRDC, designed to provide Grade 12 students with hands-on experience in real work environment during their school holidays. The work-based learning supports the HRDC in bridging the gap between academic learning and the world of work. During their placement, students are supervised by a school mentor as well as an enterprise-based mentor.
