New Trauma and Emergency Unit set up at Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital
A new Trauma and Emergency Unit aimed at strengthening emergency health care services was inaugurated, yesterday at Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis.
The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem; the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed; the Member of Parliament, Dr Farhad Ismael Aumeer; and higher officials were present.
The project, announced as part of the 2025 Budget measures to modernise public health care services, features upgraded infrastructure including a new minor operation theatre and a colour-coded triage system designed to improve patient flow and emergency response. The red, yellow and green zones will allow medical teams to prioritise patients according to the severity of their conditions, ensuring faster and more efficient treatment.
In his address, Minister Bachoo stated that the inauguration of the Unit reflects Government’s firm commitment to modernising the health care system, strengthening life-saving services and ensuring that the public hospitals are better equipped to respond to critical situations. “With the establishment of the Trauma and Emergency Unit across our regional hospitals, we are bringing our system closer to international standards,” he said.
“The initiative forms part of a wider transformation and reform of the public health system which purports to investing in infrastructure, reinforcing specialised services, and reviewing the way care is delivered across the country,” added the Minister. He indicated that after the inauguration of the Trauma and Emergency Unit in March at Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital, similar units will be set up at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) Hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Victoria Hospital.
According to Mr Bachoo, the new Unit will provide a more organised and efficient environment for the management of emergency cases as it adopts an integrated approach. He averred that it will support faster assessment and decision-making together with better coordination among teams, and more timely intervention for patients requiring urgent care.
Regarding the introduction of the structured coloured-coded triage system, the Minister underlined its benefits as it will allow patients to be assessed according to the emergency of their conditions, reduce unnecessary delays and enable emergency departments to function more safely and efficiently. He explained that red category patients will need immediate life-saving interventions, yellow category patients will be given urgent medical attention and green category patients who have less urgent conditions can safely wait for assessment.
While paying tribute to doctors, nurses, frontliners and all health care workers for their hard work and dedication, Mr Bachoo condemned the physical and verbal violence directed at them. He specifically deplored a recent incident in which staff from the Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente (SAMU), dispatched to Petite Rivière following a road accident, were attacked. The Minister called for a change in mindset and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent any harm to medical professionals and their vehicles.
For their part, Ministers Uteem and Mahomed, along with Dr Aumeer, welcomed the establishment of the Trauma and Emergency Unit, describing it as a valuable addition to the hospital. Mr Uteem commended the frontliners and hospital personnel for working under pressure to save lives and deliver effective services to the public. He emphasised the importance of providing staff with suitable working conditions and appropriate psychological support to prevent burnout. Meanwhile, Mr Mahomed highlighted that, in cases of road accident injuries and trauma, time is of the essence, adding the new Unit will ensure more timely and effective care for accident victims.
