Sports — AI-Driven Referee System Successfully Tests in Major Tournament
The International Football Technology Council (IFTC) announced the successful trial of an AI-driven referee system during this year’s Continental Cup. The system uses 300 high-speed micro-cameras positioned around the stadium, combined with predictive machine-learning models to analyze every movement on the field in real time.
During the tournament, the AI made 97% of decisions automatically, including fouls, offsides, and ball-out calls. Human referees were present only to verify edge cases and oversee safety protocols. Players reported smoother game flow, fewer interruptions, and more consistent rulings.
Still, skeptics argue that relying heavily on AI removes the human intuition that has shaped the sport for decades. The IFTC insists that the goal is not to replace referees but to support them with precision data.
Based on the successful trial, the system may be introduced in select leagues next season. The council expects heated debate among fans, coaches, and traditionalists.
