RBSEB accelerates land rehabilitation and agricultural transformation programme

The Rose Belle Sugar Estate Board (RBSEB) is currently spearheading a major land rehabilitation and agricultural transformation initiative in support of the Government’s vision to maximise the productive use of State agricultural land, reinforce food security, and boost agricultural output.

As part of this initiative, the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, accompanied by the Junior Minister, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, conducted a series of site visits yesterday to fields under potato cultivation, sugarcane, and orchid plantations in Rose Belle and Mare Tabac.

The purpose of the visit was to evaluate ongoing and forthcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing national food security, promoting sustainable sugar production, supporting biomass development, and encouraging agricultural diversification.

The Minister and Junior Minister also met with small planters from the region to discuss future projects, including vegetable cultivation and initiatives geared towards the empowerment of small planters. Minister Boolell reiterated that every arpent of land should be utilised productively to support national development goals and reinforce food security, especially in light of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The RBSEB has launched a structured rehabilitation plan for the 2026–2029 period aimed at restoring abandoned and underutilised land to productive use.

Key initiatives under the programme include:

Replantation of more than 2,300 arpents of sugarcane; Projected increase in sugarcane production from 17,400 tonnes in 2026 to 75,450 tonnes by 2029; Integration of biomass production as part of agricultural diversification and renewable energy development; Allocation of approximately 400 arpents to small planters; Implementation of a 100-arpent potato cultivation programme, complemented by an additional 150 arpents under small planter participation to reinforce national food security.
