Workshop encourages Eco-Responsible Tourism
A workshop focusing on sustainable waste management in the hospitality sector, organised by the Tourism Authority in collaboration with the TUI Care Foundation, was held yesterday, at the Heritage Awali Golf and Spa Resort, in Bel Ombre, under the theme “Rethinking Waste: Eco-Responsible Tourism Practices”.
The event was organised as part of the “Zero Waste Destination Mauritius” programme. It saw the participation of operators of the industry, and representatives of tourist residences, guesthouses, restaurants, and table d'hôtes, licensed by the Tourism Authority.
Present on the occasion, the Junior Minister of Tourism, Mr Jean Sydney Pierre, dwelt on the responsibility of each and every one to protect the planet against major threats, including the impacts of climate change and widespread pollution. He noted that the tourism industry itself is responsible for a significant amount of pollution, generating some 35 million tons of solid waste annually. He also pointed out that plastic pollution in the ocean remains one of the biggest environmental challenges.
The Junior Minister thus underlined the urgent need for collective action to promote sustainable practices in the tourism sector. He called for more conservation efforts to prevent irreversible damage to the Island’s natural beauty and biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future for the next generation.
In line with the aim to advancing a sustainable, circular economy for the tourism industry, Mr Pierre recalled that the Ministry provides support and guidance to operators of the industry to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
According to the Junior Minister, sustainability is no longer an option but a necessity for the survival of the tourism industry. “Immediate actions and implementation of sustainable practices are a must to keep the industry thriving,” he said. He further cautioned that possessing sustainable travel and tourism certifications has responsibilities attached to them.
Moreover, the Junior Minister highlighted that investing in eco-friendly and sustainable practices will be beneficial to tap into the high-growth niche market of green tourism. It will also contribute to levelling up services to meet expectations of informed tourists who are seeking sustainable travel destinations.
The workshop
The workshop explored solutions aimed at advancing innovative waste management and sustainable tourism. Participants gained insights on how they can contribute to waste reduction, minimise ecological footprints and promote both environmental responsibility and economic sustainability.
