Mrs Marie Myriam Dominique marks a century of life and resilience

Mrs Marie Myriam Dominique, born Mamet, celebrated her 100th birthday, yesterday, during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, in Rose Hill.

The Mayor of Beau Bassin- Rose Hill, Mrs Marie Gabriella Rimena Batour, and other guests were present.

To honour the centenarian, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity presented Mrs Dominique with a bouquet; a centenarian medal; a certificate; and a cheque of Rs 26,203. She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund and gifts from the Senior Citizens Council.

Born to Mr Lucien Mamet, a market inspector, and Mrs Marie Bernadette Carosy, a housewife, Mrs Dominique grew up at La Gaîté Street in Port Louis alongside her sister. She pursued her studies up to Standard VI and later devoted herself to homemaking.

In August 1953, she married Mr Luc Ludovic Dominique, who worked as a telephone attendant at the Ministry of Health and was also a tailor. The couple shared many years together before his passing in March 2001 at the age of 78. They had one son and two daughters, though one of her daughters passed away several years ago.

Mrs Dominique enjoys a variety of foods and remains particularly attentive to cleanliness and order in her surroundings. Known in her younger days as a talented ballroom dancer, she also had a passion for crocheting and sewing.

Throughout her life, she placed her family’s well-being above all else and dedicated herself to the upbringing and happiness of her children. She attributes her longevity to her strong faith in God, as well as the care and support provided by her son and daughter-in-law.

Despite age-related ailments such as high blood pressure and cataract, Mrs Dominique remains mobile and communicates well, continuing to inspire those around her through her resilience and positive outlook.
