PM meets newly elected members of Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation
The
Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam,
met today at the New Treasury Building in Port
Louis, members of Mauritius Sanatan Dharma
Temples Federation to discuss several issues concerning the Hindu
community.
In a statement following the meeting, the President of the Federation, Mr Bhojraj Ghoorbin, described the discussions as fruitful and constructive, recalling that it was the first meeting between the newly elected members of the Federation and the Prime Minister following the Federation’s elections held in March.
Among the issues raised was the sacred ‘Char Dham’ pilgrimage in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand, which covers the holy sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Mr Ghoorbin requested Government support in the form of subsidised air tickets to Delhi for pilgrims, as well as discussions with the Indian authorities to facilitate helicopter access for senior citizens travelling to Kedarnath due to the difficult 19-kilometre uphill trek.
Mr Ghoorbin also highlighted plans by the Federation to establish a ‘gurukul’, aimed at promoting holistic learning rooted in the principles of Sanatan Dharma. In this context, the use of an unused Sugar Insurance Labour Welfare Fund building in Grand Bassin is envisaged. The Federation would undertake renovation works at its own expense so that the facility could be used for meditation sessions and educational activities for children, he said.
He further requested increased MBC broadcast coverage of Hindu festivals during the 19h30 news bulletin.
