Pre-budget consultations: Unity and inclusive growth priorities set
The Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, has called for consolidated efforts, national unity and solidarity to reinforce Mauritius’ capacity to navigate and overcome the prevailing socioeconomic challenges.
He was speaking yesterday at a press conference in the Lunch Room of the National Assembly in Port Louis, following the final round of pre-budget consultations with representatives of various associations, federations, non-governmental organisations and unions, which concluded with meetings involving local artists and youth associations.
Mr Damry recalled that he has been chairing a series of pre-budget consultations, which he said were marked by open dialogue and frank discussions. He further assured that the requests and recommendations emerging from these meetings will be carefully analysed and submitted to the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for consideration.
The Junior Minister pointed out that the final stage of the process will involve consultations with all Ministries to review their current constraints and key challenges, including food and energy security, employment, and purchasing power. Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of restructuring inefficient systems.
Mr Damry affirmed that the Government’s priority for the 2026–2027 Budget is to set out a renewed vision and strategic direction aimed at generating growth and prosperity for the country. This, he said, would help boost the economy, promote inclusivity, strengthen key sectors, and address pressing national concerns.
Artists call for stronger welfare support
During the pre-budget consultative meeting with local artists, Mr Roshan Boolkah, representative of l’Union des Artistes, stated that he proposed the introduction of welfare support schemes for artists and their families, as well as financial assistance for event organisers to encourage more cultural activities.
He also highlighted the importance of promoting music education in schools and advocated for the establishment of a minimum remuneration framework for performing artists.
Focus on youth development initiatives
Following the pre-budget consultation dedicated to youth associations, the National Youth Council representative, Mr Dev Fowdur, stated that discussions focused on new programmes and initiatives aimed at youth development and empowerment.
He further indicated that he proposed enhanced collaboration with Government to advance green projects, adding that continued dialogue would be essential to better plan for the future.
