Minister Gunness reviews progress of key road projects

The Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, accompanied by the Chief Government Whip, Mrs Marie Geneviève Stéphanie Anquetil, along with officers from the Road Development Authority (RDA) and the Traffic Road Management and Safety Unit, conducted site visits, yesterday in Trianon and Ebène, to assess progress on key road projects.

These include the construction of the Pellegrin–Trianon Link Road, the upgrading of Julius Nyerere Avenue (B1), and the construction of the B1–M1 Link Road in Ébène.

In a statement, Minister Gunness indicated that the Pellegrin–Trianon Link Road project, estimated at around Rs 50 million, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026. Launched in September 2025, the project will connect Petit Camp to the M3–A14 axis in Ébène, with the aim of reducing traffic congestion in St Jean and along the M1 motorway.

He explained that the new link road will improve accessibility for commuters travelling to and from Petit Camp, Trianon, and surrounding regions, while also providing an alternative route to ease traffic during peak hours. The Minister further highlighted that the project will help alleviate congestion at key pressure points, particularly around the St Jean roundabout, thereby improving overall traffic flow and convenience for road users.

Regarding the upgrading of Julius Nyerere Avenue (B1) and the construction of the B1–M1 Link Road in Ebène, the Minister noted that the project, estimated at Rs 350 million, commenced in April 2025 and is scheduled for completion by September this year. He stated that the development aims to ease traffic along the B1 corridor, improve access to the newly built St Pierre Bypass/Ebène Link Road and Tribeca Mall, and provide an additional exit route from Ebène Cybercity to the M1 motorway towards Port Louis.

Motorists will no longer need to pass through Réduit to access the motorway, as the new link will allow direct entry, thereby reduce travel time and congestion while enhancing overall commuting efficiency, he highlighted.

Minister Gunness also underlined that, for the first time in the country, an innovative construction method, Maccaferri Green Terramesh, will be used. This eco-friendly, modular system is designed for stabilising steep, vegetated slopes and offers several advantages, including rapid and straightforward installation without the need for external formwork, high structural flexibility, efficient drainage, and improved environmental integration through natural vegetation.
