Government and stakeholders review measures for safer pesticide management
A one-day validation workshop on pesticide regulations under the Use of Pesticides Act 2018 was held yesterday at the Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, bringing together key stakeholders to examine and provide input on draft regulations aimed at enhancing pesticide management in Mauritius.
The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries within the framework of the ISLANDS Project, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, and the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Alka Bhatia, were present for the opening session.
The one-day validation workshop sought to ensure that the proposed regulations relating to pesticide mixing and application, user training and certification, as well as residue testing of local and imported produce, are practical, enforceable and aligned with national priorities. It also provided a platform for public institutions, industry stakeholders and consumer representatives to contribute feedback ahead of the finalisation and implementation of the regulations.
In his address, Minister Boolell underscored the need to promote the safe and responsible use of pesticides in Mauritius through a robust regulatory framework and enhanced compliance mechanisms. While acknowledging the continued importance of pesticides in agricultural production, he stressed that their use must be effectively regulated to protect public health, ensure food safety and preserve the environment.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring, scientific assessment and close collaboration among stakeholders to ensure compliance with established standards and legal requirements. He noted that the workshop would serve to consolidate feedback from planters, institutions and other stakeholders ahead of the finalisation and implementation of the regulations under the Use of Pesticides Act 2018.
For her part, Ms Alka Bhatia reiterated UNDP’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in advancing sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening environmental governance. She highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts and evidence-based policies in promoting safer pesticide management and advancing sustainable development goals.
