Prime Minister highlights education as key driver of socio-economic progress
Education remains a cornerstone of economic progress and social development, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and a more inclusive future. The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, underscored this message today at a ceremony marking the 104th anniversary of Arsenal Government School.
Also present at the event were the Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad; the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; Member of the National Assembly, Mr Kaviraj Rookny; and the Headmistress of Arsenal Government School, Mrs Sarda Naga.
On this occasion, a magazine showcasing the school’s achievements and students’ creativity was launched. The Prime Minister also unveiled a commemorative plaque and took part in a tree-planting ceremony as a symbolic gesture.
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Ramgoolam paid tribute to the school’s remarkable journey, highlighting its enduring commitment to providing quality education. Established around 1922, he noted that the institution has consistently served the local community. He also commended the school’s recent success rate in the Primary School Achievement Certificate examinations and praised educators for their dedication, hard work, and perseverance.
Underscoring the vital role of education in empowering individuals and driving national progress, Dr Ramgoolam observed that Mauritius witnessed a turning point in 1977 with the introduction of free education under the leadership of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The policy reform significantly expanded access to education and contributed to the country’s socio-economic development, he indicated, reaffirming his firm commitment to continued investment in education and human capital.
Government, he stressed, remains steadfast in this direction by promoting inclusivity and ensuring equitable access to education for all, including women and persons with disabilities. The Prime Minister highlighted the ongoing efforts to advance gender equality, noting that women are increasingly assuming key leadership positions, including the historic appointment of the country’s first woman Deputy Prime Minister.
Underscoring the importance of discipline and values in personal development, Prime Minister Ramgoolam indicated that the NICE project will be reintegrated into schools to instil lifelong principles in students. He also encouraged learners to remain curious and committed to the pursuit of knowledge.
For his part, Minister Gungapersad, commended the school for its notable improvement in examination performance, with the success rate rising from 44% to 77%. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to addressing key challenges such as bullying, drug abuse, and all forms of violence in schools.
He further emphasised the potential of youth, noting that the Government has enabled around 300 students to retake their examinations while extending educational opportunities to around 2,500 learners through the Foundation Programme.
