Academia contributes to pre-budget discussions on education sector
As part of the ongoing 2026/27 pre-budget consultations, the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, met today in Port Louis with representatives from Academia and Federations of Private Secondary Schools.
In a statement following the meeting, the Director General of the Open University of Mauritius, Dr Dinesh Surroop, highlighted the need to internationalise universities to attract foreign students, noting that the export of higher education services could boost revenue and contribute to the country’s GDP.
Discussions also covered the promotion of digital transformation in the tertiary sector, as well as a request to upgrade the infrastructure of the Open University of Mauritius.
On his part, the Director of Academic Programmes at the African Leadership College of Higher Education, Dr Stephen Naicken, emphasised the potential for collaboration among tertiary institutions to foster entrepreneurship. He also called for improved visa regulations for international students, underlining their contribution to revenue generation and their role in supporting the economy through internships.
