Tourism stakeholders submit proposals ahead of National Budget 2026–2027

In the context of the preparation of the National Budget 2026-2027, representatives of the tourism association as well as tour and pleasure craft operators presented their proposals to the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, and other higher officials of the Ministry, this afternoon, during the pre-budget consultative meeting held in Port Louis.

Following the meeting, participants described the discussions as constructive, noting the introduction of a revised consultation format which will allow for further engagement. Under this new approach, stakeholders will have the opportunity to reconvene and submit more detailed proposals in the coming weeks.

In light of the continued rise in tourist arrivals, representatives advanced a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening the sector. Chief among these were calls for enhanced transparency in relation to investments undertaken by tourism authorities, alongside improved security measures for visitors, and reinforced controls at immigration points.

Stakeholders also emphasised the need to boost tourist expenditure through a comprehensive review of the sector. Suggestions included broadening the traditional tourism model to incorporate alternative offerings such as staycations and workations, in addition to tapping into the silver economy.

To further enhance security, increase revenue collection, and improve oversight of visitor flows, representatives urged the regularisation of the informal segment of the tourism industry.

Environmental sustainability and fiscal management were likewise addressed, with calls for a wider adoption of photovoltaic energy systems across hotels and the introduction of project-based budgeting within the sector.
