Mr Ah-Koon adds his name to the list of Mauritian centenarians

Mr San Fat Ah-Koon celebrated his 100th birthday with family members and friends today at Les Jardins Fleuris Residential Care Home for the Elderly in Quatre Bornes.

Organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, the official ceremony was graced by the Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley; the Mayor of Quatre Bornes, Mr Bryan Ruddy Kennoo; and other personalities.

On this occasion, Mr Ah-Koon received a bouquet, a centenarian medal, and a certificate, along with a cheque of Rs 26,203 and a Digital Air Fryer from the Ministry. The Senior Citizens Council honoured him with a commemorative shield, a bath towel, a hand towel and a personalised birthday card. In addition, the National Solidarity Fund presented a cheque of Rs 10,000 as a gesture of national support.

Born on 28 April 1926 in Quatre Bornes, Mr Ah-Koon, affectionately known as “Henriot,” grew up in a family of five children and shared a close bond with his twin brother, Henry. To date, only one sister and the centenarian are alive. He studied up to Standard Four before joining his father as a shopkeeper, a role he carried out with dedication throughout his working life.

On 25 November 1959, he got civilly married to Mrs Thérèse Joceline Sit-Yee and the couple settled in Quatre Bornes. They were blessed with two daughters and Mr Ah-Koon is also a proud grandfather of four grandchildren.

The centenarian enjoys simple pleasures such as eating snacks and in his younger years, he was passionate about sports, particularly football and tennis. He also nurtured a love for music, playing the harmonica and singing. He attributes his longevity to a disciplined and hygienic lifestyle, combined with regular physical activity.
