Welfare State: Buttressing cooperation in specialised healthcare services
In a bid to strengthen cooperation in specialised healthcare services and reinforce the capacity of the national health system, the Ministry of Health and Wellness has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Kauvery Medical Care (India) Limited, yesterday in Ebene.
The signing ceremony, held in presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Mrs Anishta Babooram; the Acting Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mr Parmanand Mawah; the Medical Director of Kauvery Hospitals, Dr Iyappan Ponnuswamy, as well as other personalities.
In his address, Minister Bachoo described the MoU as an important step in expanding international collaboration in the medical field and improving access to advanced treatment options for Mauritian patients. He recalled that the Ministry has concluded several MoUs with overseas hospitals to facilitate treatments not currently available in Mauritius.
The partnership with Sri Kauvery Medical Care will promote knowledge exchange and cooperation in high-specialty areas such as organ transplantation, neuro-intervention, paediatric surgery, bone marrow transplantation, and cardiac electrophysiology. By virtue of the MoU Mauritian healthcare professionals will receive advanced training and technical expertise to support the upgrading of local medical facilities.
Additionally, Kauvery Hospital has handed over two guest houses to the Ministry to accommodate Mauritian patients and their families undergoing treatment in India. The hospital has also donated equipment for the Renal Unit that is soon to be inaugurated. These measures, he said, testifies Government’s commitment to modernising healthcare services and ensuring Mauritians benefit from high-quality specialised medical care.
Dr Ponnuswamy welcomed the partnership, expressing confidence that it will greatly benefit Mauritian patients who will have access to comprehensive services at affordable costs. He further pointed out that Kauvery’s support centre in Mauritius will ensure post-operative follow-up care for patients returning from India. Free teleconsultation services will also be available, reducing the need for patients to travel for hospital visits, he added.
