Specialist Mission Boosts Access to Advanced Interventional Radiology Services
Dr Amit Sahu, an experienced
interventional radiologist with over 12 years of clinical practice, successfully
completed a medical mission at Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital from 13 to 17 April
2026, further strengthening Mauritius’ ability to provide advanced, minimally
invasive treatments locally.
In this context, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met Dr Amit Sahu yesterday at the hospital in Port Louis.
In a statement, Minister Bachoo expressed his gratitude to Dr Sahu for his collaboration with the Ministry, noting that the initiative marks a major step in expanding access to interventional radiology services and enhancing local medical expertise.
The Minister highlighted that renowned international specialists are regularly invited to Mauritius, allowing patients to benefit from world-class care without the need to travel abroad. This approach, he emphasised, helps reduce costs and alleviate patient stress, while offering local doctors valuable hands-on training opportunities and supporting their professional development.
Mr Bachoo indicated that Dr Sahu reviewed 20 complex medical cases and carried out advanced interventional procedures on 15 patients, mainly for oncology-related conditions. These included Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE), biopsies, biliary drainage, nephrostomy, embolisation, and diagnostic angiography for neurosurgical cases.
A particularly notable achievement was the successful treatment of a liver tumour using TACE, a procedure that previously required patients to be referred abroad. This milestone, he underlined, reflects Mauritius’ increasing capacity to deliver sophisticated and cost-effective medical care locally.
Addressing the shortage of healthcare personnel, the Minister stated that the Government is actively recruiting nursing students as well as diploma-level students from Polytechnic institutions to strengthen the health sector workforce.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery through strategic partnerships, ongoing professional development, and the adoption of advanced medical technologies for the benefit of all Mauritians.
Dr Sahu, for his part, expressed his intention to further develop neuro and peripheral interventional radiology in the region, contributing to the development of stronger systems and specialised departments in Mauritius.
By enhancing local capacity, he noted, patients will be able to access high-quality treatment within the country, thereby reducing both emotional and financial burdens. He added that while Mauritius already benefits from solid medical infrastructure, the establishment of additional dedicated laboratories remains essential to achieving long-term self-sufficiency in advanced radiological care.
Dr Amit Sahu belongs to a select group of specialists trained in both neuro and peripheral interventional radiology. He has completed advanced training at leading institutions in India and the United States, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is an active member of several international professional associations.
