National Infrastructure: Tamarina Bypass Project at feasibility study stage
The Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed, effected a site visit yesterday in the western region of the island to assess the feasibility of the proposed Tamarina Bypass project.
In a statement, the Acting Prime Minister underlined that the Tamarina Bypass project, spanning over some eight kilometres, can be a game changer for the inhabitants of the region by significantly improving accessibility while easing traffic congestion. He informed that the Ministry of National Infrastructure will carry out detailed assessments to determine the project’s viability and define the way forward.
He further reassured that environmental considerations will remain a priority throughout the project’s implementation.
Addressing the issue of squatters, Mr Mohamed emphasised that Government is committed to ensure access to decent housing equipped with essential amenities. Efforts are underway to identify suitable land for the development of social housing for vulnerable families, he said.
Regarding registered applicants for social housing, Mr Mohamed stated that 20 sites have already been earmarked for the construction of housing units, adding that the Ministry of Housing and Lands is collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to secure the necessary funding. He also pointed out to possible initiatives involving public-private partnerships aimed at developing affordable housing options for other categories of individuals.17 April 2026
