Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service better equipped for hazardous materials response
The Government of the United States of America (U.S), through the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the U.S. Embassy, is continuously supporting the Government of the Republic of Mauritius with regard to hazardous materials (Hazmat) response and counter weapons of mass destruction incidents in Mauritius.
In this context, a handing over ceremony was organised today at the Coromandel Fire Station whereby Hazmat Equipment were remitted to the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) by the U.S. Embassy. A simulation exercise by the Hazmat Unit of the MFRS was also held.
The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; the Junior Minister, Mr Fawzi Allymun; the Chargé d’affaires, a.i at the U.S. Embassy, Mr Craig Halbmaier; the Chief Fire Officer, Mr Ashok Ramdhean; as well as other personalities were also present on the occasion.
In his address, Minister Woochit highlighted that this handing over reinforces the longstanding relationship between Mauritius and the U.S., built on shared values such as safety, cooperation and resilience. He observed that the equipment is expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of the MFRS, enabling them to respond more effectively and safely to increasingly complex hazards arising from industrial growth, port activities and the transport of dangerous materials.
The Minister pointed out that this initiative goes beyond equipment and also includes training and capacity building, which are essential for ensuring that personnel can use the resources effectively. He further underlined Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the MFRS, as demonstrated by projects such as the construction of new fire stations, the recruitment of additional officers and the procurement of modern vehicles.
As for Mr Halbmaier, he assured that the U.S. is committed to supporting nations in their efforts to protect their citizens, especially in the face of potential threats from hazardous materials. As such, he stated, the equipment being donated, which includes state-of-the-art protective gears and specialised Hazmat equipment, was carefully selected to enhance the MFRS capabilities in managing and responding to emergencies. This donation reflects the U.S. belief in the importance of collaboration and trust between the two nations, he added.
For his part, Mr Ramdhean outlined that the new equipment received will enable the MFRS to better tackle and resolve incidents involving hazardous materials. He also seized the opportunity to thank the U.S. for their continued support.
