Minister Mahomed addresses road safety and public transport issues in Constituency No 7

The Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, held a meeting, yesterday in Port Louis, with the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sukon; the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah, and Member of the National Assembly, Dr Sandeep Prayag, to discuss pressing road safety concerns and shortcomings in public transport services affecting Constituency No. 7.

Representatives of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit and the National Land Transport Authority as well as officers of the Ministry were also present.

In a statement, Minister Mahomed underlined that the issues raised by residents of Poudre D’Or Hamlet, L’Espérance Trébuchet, Gokhoola, L’Amitié, Mapou and Rivière du Rempart were given due consideration. A range of corrective measures has been proposed, including the installation of raised pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, clearer road markings, improved street lighting, additional traffic signage, and the provision of more buses to better cater for the needs of the region.

The Minister expressed confidence that the relevant authorities will take prompt action to implement these measures and formulate additional recommendations where necessary to address outstanding concerns. He emphasised that these initiatives are intended to enhance road safety and improve the overall quality of life of residents. A site visit is also scheduled to enable a more thorough assessment and the development of concrete and practical solutions.

Discussions also focused on the mobility challenges encountered by residents who rely on bus routes 159 and 22 in Mapou, particularly in accessing hospitals, workplaces, and educational institutions. Proposals were further put forward to reinstate Sunday bus services on routes 84 and 85, introduce early departures at 06:00 and 06:15, and address reported irregularities in bus services affecting areas such as Petite Julie, Triolet, and Plaine des Roches.
