Mauritius and Australia to enhance cooperation in Public Sector development
Strengthening cooperation in public sector development and capacity building was at the fore of discussions during a courtesy call by the High Commissioner of Australia to Mauritius, Ms Kate Chamley, on the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah, today in Port-Louis.
In a statement, Minister Pentiah highlighted the importance of consolidating bilateral relations between Mauritius and Australia. He emphasised that valuable lessons can be drawn from Australia’s experience in public service reforms, particularly with regard to the implementation of its Public Service Act and related legislative frameworks. He underlined that such advancements, developed over several years, provide meaningful insights for ongoing reforms in Mauritius.
The Minister also indicated that closer engagement between both countries in these fields would be highly beneficial. He further expressed the wish for the elaboration of a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate structured knowledge exchange, including opportunities linked to academic programmes in public service administration.
For her part, the Australian High Commissioner noted that discussions covered various aspects of the public service, with particular emphasis on capacity building. She indicated that avenues to further deepen cooperation in these areas will be explored.
Ms Chamley also spoke about the Australia Awards Scholarships Programme, noting that applications are currently open for the 2027 intake. She observed that the programme offers master’s level scholarships for mid-career professionals, including civil servants, Non-Governmental Organisations staff and private sector representatives. She moreover expressed optimism that the exchanges initiated during the meeting will be further developed in the future.
