Minister Pentiah consults Unions on reducing energy use in Public Service
A consultative meeting, chaired by the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah, was held yesterday afternoon with trade unions representatives to discuss the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on the public service at the seat of the Ministry in Port Louis.
The aim of the meeting was to engage with the unions, consider their proposals and explore practical measures to reduce energy consumption and operational costs in offices and at home.
The representatives present included members from the Federation of Public Sector and Other Unions, State and Other Employees Federation, Federation of Civil Service and Other Unions, All Workers Trade Unions Federation, Union of Public Human Resource Professionals, Government Office Auxiliary Union and Government General Services Union.
In a statement, Minister Pentiah highlighted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is having direct and long-term effects on the country, making it important for public service officers to adopt simple steps to save energy both at work and at home. He explained that these measures would help reduce electricity costs, preserve important resources such as water, fuel, and fossil fuels and promote responsible energy use.
Among the measures being considered are flexitime, telework, hybrid work models, and carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Participation in these initiatives would be voluntary with an option form made available for officers who wish to take part, added the Minister.
Mr Pentiah also stressed the importance for good communication, teamwork and shared responsibility among ministries and employees to ensure the success of these initiatives. He added that trade union's proposals will be reviewed and incorporated into a report to be submitted to the Cabinet.
