Health Minister reiterates Government’s commitment to providing specialised care at Regional Hospitals

At the inauguration of a Stoke Unit, yesterday at Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, reiterated Government’s commitment to provide specialised healthcare services closer to the population.

The Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem; the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Anishta Babooram; the Members of Parliament, Dr Farhad Ismael Aumeer, and Mr Mohamed Ehsan Juman; and senior officials, were present at the event.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo stressed that each of the five Regional Hospitals - Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital, Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital in Flacq, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) Hospital in Pamplemousses, Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle, and Victoria Hospital in Candos - should be equipped with a Stroke Unit, a Geriatric unit, a specialised diabetes centre and other essential specialised healthcare facilities.

The Minister explained that the initiative was in line with the budgetary measure announced in 2025 to improve healthcare services. He stated that implementation of the measure was nearing completion, with approximately 95% of the planned provisions for general and specialised healthcare facilities having been achieved.

Referring to the newly inaugurated Stroke Unit, Mr Bachoo recalled that, previously, patients experiencing a stroke had to be transported from regional hospitals to the specialised facility at Victoria Hospital in Candos. “Such delays could have serious consequences, as patients might not receive the required specialised treatment in time,” he said. The Minister added that with the establishment of the new unit, patients could now access specialised stroke care closer to home, thereby facilitating more timely treatment.

According to Mr Bachoo, Government’s policy is founded on the principle that every Mauritian mattered. He said that, despite resource constraints, the Government remains committed to developing hospital infrastructure, strengthening healthcare services and meeting the needs of the population.

For their part, Ministers Uteem and Mahomed, along with Junior Minister Babooram and Member of Parliament Juman, put forward the various healthcare units being established to address the needs of communities in their respective areas. They welcomed the transformation of regional hospitals enabling patients to benefit from more timely and effective care. They also underscored Government’s efforts to modernise the public health system through investment in infrastructure, the enhancement of specialised services, and a review of healthcare delivery across the country.
