New Julius Nyerere B1–M1 Link Road to ease traffic flow in Ebène

The new Julius Nyerere B1–M1 Link Road in Ebène, aiming to ease traffic flow in the region, improve road safety and provide motorists with an alternative route to the M1 motorway towards Port-Louis and the northern regions, was inaugurated yesterday afternoon by the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness.

The Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry; the Chief Government Whip, Mrs Marie Genevieve Stéphanie Anquetil; the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Vedasingam Vasudevachariar Baloomoody; and the Chairperson of the Road Development Authority (RDA), Mr Seewoonarain Koonjul; as well as other personalities were present at the event.

In a statement, Minister Gunness highlighted the importance of improving road infrastructure in Ebène, which has developed into a major business and commercial centre with increasing traffic volumes. He explained that the new link road will provide an alternative exit from Ebène Cybercity towards Port-Louis and facilitate journeys, particularly during peak hours.

The Minister also dwelt on the use of the TerraMesh system, an innovative engineering technique being used for the first time in Mauritius for this type of road infrastructure. This system, he observed, combines mesh facing soil reinforcement to stabilise the slope and support the road embankment in an area with challenging ground conditions.

He further expressed satisfaction with the project’s implementation, indicating that it was completed a few weeks ahead of the contractual deadline and within the initial contract value.

The project, to the tune of some Rs 332.12 million, kick-started on 09 April 2025. It involved the upgrading and dualling of approximately 400 metres of Julius Nyerere Avenue (B1), 100 metres of Rue de L’Institut and 300 metres of the B1–M1 Link Road.

The works also included improvements to the signalised junction at Julius Nyerere Avenue and Bank Street; the construction of a new roundabout at the Bank Street–Wall Street junction; the realignment of the junction on Silicon Avenue near Maeva Tower; and improvements to the existing roundabout near the RDA offices. A ramp and an approximately 225-metre auxiliary lane were constructed to connect the new roundabout to the northbound carriageway of the M1 motorway.

Road safety features include footpaths; a cycle track with buffer zones; staggered pedestrian crossings; road markings; and roadside barriers. Solar street lighting and drainage improvements were also incorporated into the project.

The upgraded road network is expected to strengthen connectivity between Ebène Cybercity, Tribeca Mall, the St Pierre Bypass and the M1 motorway, while improving traffic circulation and providing safer and more convenient travel for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
