MoU signed to strengthen specialised ophthalmology services in Mauritius

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening specialised ophthalmology services in Mauritius was signed between the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, India, yesterday at the Ministry's headquarters in Ebène.

The MoU aims to strengthen specialised ophthalmology services in Mauritius through capacity building of local healthcare professionals, technical assistance to upgrade existing facilities, access to advanced eye treatments, continuous medical education and enhanced referral pathways for patients requiring specialised care.

Signatories were the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mr Parmanand Mawah, and Vice President Africa Operations of Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Mr Anand Ramanathan.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister, Mrs Anishta Babooram; senior officials of the Ministry; and representatives of Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital attended the signing ceremony.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo highlighted the importance of strengthening international cooperation to improve ophthalmology services in Mauritius. Referring to his previous visit to Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital and its expertise in innovative surgical techniques, he emphasised the opportunities that the collaboration will offer to Mauritian patients requiring specialised treatment.

He indicated that the MoU will also facilitate exchanges of medical expertise, including visits by Indian specialists to Mauritius and training opportunities for local doctors. Furthermore, he stated that Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital could be included among overseas institutions receiving Mauritian patients requiring specialised eye care.

For his part, Mr Ramanathan outlined the institution's extensive international network and expertise in advanced ophthalmic procedures. He expressed confidence that the collaboration will enable Mauritian patients to benefit from innovative treatments and specialised services at affordable costs.

Established in Chennai in 1957, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital specialises in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, corneal and retinal treatments, refractive surgery and paediatric ophthalmology.
