NSLD Rent-to-Own Scheme facilitates access to homeownership
A handover ceremony under the National Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD) Rent-to-Own Scheme was held this morning in Pointe aux Piments, in the presence of the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed. The initiative aims to facilitate access to homeownership for families facing financial difficulties.
In a statement, Minister Mohamed expressed satisfaction that 18 families had received the keys to their housing units under the scheme, which provides an opportunity for households unable to secure conventional bank loans to become homeowners.
The Minister explained that beneficiaries will pay a monthly rent of Rs 4,000 for a period of up to five years, with the rental payments, after deduction of maintenance costs, being offset against the final purchase price of the housing units. He further announced that additional housing units will soon be allocated to eligible families in several regions, including eight in Malherbes, one in Notre Dame, four in Valetta and seven in Henrietta.
Mr Mohamed reiterated Government's commitment to improving access to decent and affordable housing for vulnerable households. He also reaffirmed ongoing efforts to regularise the situation of squatters occupying public and private land.
