SILWF: Plots of land to be transferred to current occupiers free of charge

A total of 27 plots of land situated on the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund (SILWF) Housing Estates will be transferred, at no cost, to their current occupiers, with a view to regularising their occupation and addressing a longstanding matter.

In the early 1960s, the SILWF acquired land in various parts of the island for the construction of houses and flats for sugar and dock workers. Some of the remaining land was used for community centres, playgrounds, green spaces and children's parks, while other plots were allocated to socio-cultural organisations.

Over the years, certain unutilised plots of land were occupied without authorisation for residential, agricultural, commercial or religious purposes.

The Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund will undertake the necessary verification and procedures before proceeding with the transfers.
