Football tournament to promote fitness among local authority employees

A football tournament for employees of local authorities will be organised by the Ministry of Local Government in collaboration with the Local Authorities Employees Union, bringing together around 600 participants.

The announcement was made this morning by the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit, during a press conference at the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Darmarajen Nagalingum, and the Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Mrs Christelle Pondard, were also present.

On the occasion, football equipment and T-shirts were handed over to representatives of district councils.

Minister Woochit explained that the tournament seeks to encourage local authority employees to engage in extracurricular activities, boost motivation and promote a healthy lifestyle. He added that the initiative would improve employees’ quality of life while raising awareness of the benefits of physical activity and promoting a sporting culture.

The tournament, he indicated, would kick off on 29 October 2026 at the George V Stadium in Curepipe with an official launch and a parade. The competition will feature two age categories: 18 years and above, and 40 years and above, with three teams in each pool.

The finals are scheduled for 28 November 2026 at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, where a family fun day will also be held. The Minister encouraged local government employees and their families to participate actively in the event.

For his part, Minister Nagalingum called on the public to take greater care of their health by engaging in physical and recreational activities to improve their overall well-being.

He welcomed the initiative, pointing out that it would promote participation in extracurricular activities, foster networking and provide local government employees with an opportunity to interact.
