Mauritius and WMO explore ways to strengthen meteorological services

Strengthening the institutional capacity of the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) to enhance weather forecasting, climate services and early warning systems was at the centre of discussions during a courtesy call by the Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for Africa, Dr Agnes Kijazi, on the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Anand Bhagwan, today in Port Louis.

Dr Kijazi was accompanied by the Acting Director of the MMS, Dr Prithiviraj Booneeady.

In a statement following the meeting, Dr Kijazi highlighted the importance of equipping the MMS with the necessary resources and expertise to deliver high-quality meteorological and climate services to the population. She outlined the possibility of granting greater autonomy to the MMS to enable the institution to access external funding and generate additional revenue through commercial services.

Furthermore, Dr Kijazi reaffirmed the WMO's commitment to collaborating with the MMS and supporting Mauritius in strengthening its climate resilience and adaptation efforts.

For his part, Dr Booneeady emphasised the imperative of investing in modern technologies and secure sustainable funding to enable the MMS to respond effectively to evolving climatic conditions.

In this regard, he indicated that the MMS is working with the WMO on the development of a business plan aimed at facilitating access to funding and supporting the institution's future development.
