WMO reaffirms support to Mauritius’ climate resilience efforts

The Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for Africa, Dr Agnes Kijazi, reaffirmed yesterday the organisation’s commitment to supporting Mauritius’ climate resilience, adaptation and early warning priorities during a courtesy call on the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit, in Port Louis.

She commended the Government and the Mauritius Meteorological Services for their efforts to strengthen meteorological, climate and early warning services. She further emphasised the need to identify capacity gaps and sustain institutional, human, financial and technical support to reinforce national multi-hazard early warning systems.

Dr Kijazi thanked Mauritius for its continued engagement with the WMO and the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology, which promotes meteorological policy and its contribution to socio-economic development across Africa.

The WMO Director also highlighted the United Nations Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative, which aims to ensure universal protection through life-saving early warning systems by the end of 2027. She stressed the importance of building on existing national institutions and enhancing collaboration among government agencies, technical bodies, communities and development partners.
