Minister Mohamed addresses 5th Al Baraka Summit in London

Mauritius is positioning itself as a potential regional hub for waqf and Islamic social finance through the modernisation of its legal and regulatory framework, said the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Mohamed, at the 5th Al Baraka Summit held earlier this month in London.

Addressing the Summit, held under the theme “Ethics in Action: Rebuilding Foundations and Advancing the Global Impact of the Islamic Economy”, Minister Mohamed emphasised the importance of strengthening governance, transparency and professional management of waqf, an Islamic endowment institution dedicated to charitable, religious and social purposes.

According to the Minister Mauritius has embarked on modernising its Waqf Act, dating back to 1941, to align the sector with international standards and enhance institutional capacity. On that score, several proposed measures, including a national audit of waqf properties, a digital waqf registry, online cash waqf platforms, a national Shariah Advisory Board and a Mauritius Waqf Investment Fund, he added.

Mr Mohamed invited international Islamic financial institutions and investors to explore opportunities in Mauritius, highlighting the country's potential to serve as a bridge connecting Africa, Asia and the Gulf.
