Reconstructed Beau Champs Bridge now operational

The newly reconstructed Beau Champs Bridge, along the B9 Black River–Savanne Coast Road in Bel Ombre, was inaugurated on Friday 23 October 2026 by the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness. The bridge became operational on 24 October 2026. The project is intended to improve road safety and traffic flow in the area.

The Members of Parliament, Messrs Balkrishna Babajee and Shridhur Jugurnauth, and Mrs Marie Véronique Leu-Govind, as well as other personalities attended the inauguration ceremony.

In his address, Minister Gunness highlighted the importance of maintaining continuity in infrastructure development despite changes in Government. He stressed the need to ensure that projects are implemented efficiently, completed within approved budgets and delivered despite challenges encountered during construction.

Referring to the Beau Champs Bridge project, he recalled that construction began in March 2025 and encountered several challenges, including traffic diversions and technical complexities. He expressed satisfaction with the project’s completion, noting that the new bridge has a design service life of 100 years.

The Minister also highlighted the dedicated cycle track incorporated into the project as part of a long-term vision for infrastructure development. He urged motorists to exercise caution and observe speed limits at all times.

Mr Gunness further outlined preparations for major road infrastructure projects, including the M4 and M5 motorways, which are expected to improve connectivity across the island.

For their part, the three Members of Parliament welcomed the project, highlighting its benefits for residents, workers, schoolchildren and other road users. They also called for further infrastructure improvements in the region.

Undertaken by the Road Development Authority at a cost of approximately Rs 186.9 million, the project involved the construction of a new 23-metre reinforced concrete bridge, the realignment of around 660 metres of the B9 road, drainage works and other associated road improvements.

The former narrow bridge, located on a sharp bend, required traffic lights to regulate two-way traffic, causing delays and raising road safety concerns.
