Mauritius and Romania seek closer ties through La Francophonie

Mauritius and Romania are exploring opportunities to expand youth engagement and foster cooperation in education, trade and economic development through the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

These issues were discussed during a courtesy call by the Presidential Adviser and Romania’s candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the OIF, Mr Dacian Cioloș, on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

He was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Mauritius to the Republic of France, Mr Joël Marie Rault.

In a statement following the meeting, Mr Cioloș outlined his vision for the future of La Francophonie, emphasising the need to make the Organisation more relevant to its Member States. The French language should serve not only as a vehicle for shared values and cultural exchange, but also as a means of expanding young people’s access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, he stated.

He called for improvements to the Organisation’s governance to ensure that the priorities of Island States such as Mauritius are better reflected in its work. In addition, he highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation among Member States in education and training, as well as trade and economic exchanges.

Discussions moreover focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Mauritius and Romania, particularly in terms of trade and economic cooperation. Mr Cioloș referred to the 250 to 300 Mauritian doctors who had pursued their medical studies in Romania, describing these educational ties as a basis for further collaboration between the two countries.
