The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam chaired an Inter-Ministerial Committee yesterday at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis to coordinate measures aiming to address water shortages and improve water supply across Mauritius.

Several Ministers were present to review the water supply situation, including the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed; the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness; the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Patrick Gervais Assirvaden; the Minister of Industry, SME and Cooperatives, Mr Muhammad Aadil Ameer Meea; and the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit.

Representatives from the relevant Ministries also participated in the discussions to assess the situation and align efforts to address the water supply challenges.

Government is currently strengthening its response to the water supply emergency by prioritising urgent interventions, improving the management of available water resources and strengthening coordination among the relevant Ministries and Authorities given the declining reservoir levels.

Priority measures already announced include the use of additional boreholes, improvements to water infrastructure and the provision of water tankers to assist residents affected by supply disruptions.

The Committee is tasked with identifying solutions to improve water availability and ensure an effective response to the current situation.
