Education Minister announces upcoming launch of blueprint for the sector
A blueprint for the education sector is expected to be launched shortly. The Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad, made the announcement yesterday at MITD House in Phoenix.
The Minister was delivering his introductory remarks at a lecture by Indian author, educator and business consultant, Mr Shiv Khera. The lecture was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource.
According to Dr Gungapersad, the lecture aimed at enabling senior officials to benefit from Mr Khera’s experience and expertise, particularly in relation to collective wisdom, adopting different perspectives and approaches, and cultivating the right attitude to translate ideas into action.
For his part, Mr Khera invited participants to develop leaders who would serve the nation and to cultivate value-based leadership in schools, highlighting the importance of preparing young people rather than having to repair them later in life.
Mr Khera pointed to what he described as a leadership crisis, stressing that good leaders guide others and nurture future leaders, whereas poor leaders misguide others and create followers. He underscored the importance of effective leadership in building a strong nation, adding that a country which was weak internally could not command respect internationally.
Integrity, the practice of values, trustworthiness and interpersonal skills were put forward as essential qualities of good character, which Mr Khera considered more important than reputation. He was of the view that trust and integrity were not merely desirable personal qualities but also key drivers of productivity.
