Ministers Lead Site Inspection for Skatepark Project in Quatre-Bornes

A high-level delegation conducted a site visit at the Pavillon premises in Quatre-Bornes this morning, to assess the location for the upcoming construction of a new skatepark. The delegation was co-led by the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, and the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit. They were joined by the Chief Government Whip, Mrs Stéphanie Anquetil, the Mayor of the Municipal Council of Quatre-Bornes, Mr Subiraj Gungabissoon, the Chief Executive of the Municipality, Mr Vineshsing Seeparsad, and the President of the Mauritius Roller and Skateboard Federation, Mr Manoj Gunputh.

The area earmarked for the skatepark currently accommodates a tennis court, which will be relocated a few meters away from its current position to make room for the new development. The cost of the new infrastructure is estimated at approximately Rs 4 million and will benefit from funding under the Mauritius-India Grant framework.

Following the visit, Minister Boolell stated that building the skatepark will be a major asset for the town's youth, especially since the site already includes multiple sports facilities. The Chief Government Whip echoed this sentiment, emphasising the immense enthusiasm the local youth have for skateboarding and expressing her hope that the project will materialise at the soonest.

Minister Ranjiv Woochit expressed his wish for the project to reach a complete consensus, particularly among Municipal Councillors, before the Municipality moves forward with its finalisation.

Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, Mr Gunputh recalled that the setting up of this infrastructure will mark a significant first for the country in view of the growing number of young people practicing rollerblading and skateboarding.
