DPM Navarre-Marie highlights progress in gender mainstreaming

Some 60% of the recommendations of the National Gender Policy (NGP) 2022–2030 have been implemented by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, marking significant progress in advancing gender equality across the public sector. This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Arianne Navarre-Marie, today in Ebène.

She was chairing the National Steering Committee on Gender Mainstreaming, which reviewed progress made by Ministries in implementing gender-responsive measures and developing sectoral gender policies and action plans.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Jean Daniel Philippe Labonne; the Head of the Gender Unit, Mrs Vandanah Jodhoa; and representatives of various Ministries attended the meeting.

In her address, DPM Navarre-Marie dwelt on several achievements, including the establishment and strengthening of the National Steering Committee on Gender Mainstreaming, the Inter-Ministerial Gender Technical Working Committee and gender cells across Ministries and Departments. She indicated that 56 gender cells are currently operational, while nine Ministries have developed their respective sectoral gender policies, with others working towards finalising theirs.

The Deputy Prime Minister moreover pointed out that around 2,000 public officers have benefited from seminars and workshops on gender mainstreaming. On that note, she referred to technical support sought from a European Union gender expert to strengthen gender mainstreaming strategies, and to the launch of the Gender Training Toolkit and Manual for Public Officials in October 2025.

She further indicated that the Commission of Women’s Affairs of Rodrigues has been contacted regarding the handover of the Gender Policy for Rodrigues.

Looking ahead, Mrs Navarre-Marie outlined plans to extend gender mainstreaming initiatives to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), academia, the media and the private sector. These include the establishment of a technical working group for CSOs and the proposed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and the Mauritius Council of Social Service to promote gender mainstreaming within the civil society.
