New Trauma and Emergency Unit advances emergency care at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital

Emergency healthcare services in the southern region are set to be strengthened with the inauguration of a new Trauma and Emergency Unit, yesterday afternoon, at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Anishta Babooram; Members of the National Assembly, Messrs Manoj Seeburn and Ashley Ramdass; as well as other personalities.

The facility forms part of measures announced in the 2026–2027 Budget for the establishment of Trauma and Emergency Units in all five regional public hospitals across Mauritius.

The new unit will cater for patients requiring urgent medical intervention, including accident victims and those suffering from heart attacks or strokes. A colour-coded triage system will prioritise patients according to the severity of their conditions. Those classified under the red category will require immediate, life-saving intervention, while patients in the yellow category will need urgent treatment but are not in the most critical condition. Green-category patients, whose conditions are less serious, may safely wait for medical attention.

In his address, Minister Bachoo highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise public hospitals and expand specialised medical services to meet patients’ needs. He noted that dedicated stroke units were already operational at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital and Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital, enabling patients to access specialised treatment closer to their homes. He stressed that prompt medical intervention was crucial in stroke cases.

The Minister further emphasised that improving healthcare required not only specialised medical services but also qualified healthcare professionals, upgraded infrastructure and comfortable hospital facilities. He reassured that further developments were in the pipeline to enhance the quality of care and strengthen public healthcare services across the country.
