New campaign to curb electricity demand ahead of summer
Promoting
energy conservation and managing peak electricity demand will be the focus of a
new Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Campaign running from October 2026 to
April 2027, with the aim of helping to prevent electricity shortages during the
forthcoming summer season.
The campaign follows the 2025/26 initiative, which ran from October 2025 to March 2026 and raised public awareness on energy conservation through television, radio and social media programmes, as well as outreach activities at 14 locations. Other measures included announcements during metro trips, sensitisation programmes in schools, the distribution of promotional materials, the introduction of a colour-coded alert system and the promotion of energy-saving initiatives across Ministries, Departments and Parastatal bodies.
Building on these efforts, the forthcoming campaign will combine direct customer engagement with extensive mass media and digital communication to encourage consumers to adopt energy-saving practices and reduce or shift their electricity consumption, particularly during the evening peak period.
The initiative comes against a backdrop of rising electricity demand, climate change challenges and uncertainties in international fuel markets arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
