Open Day provides unique opportunity to visit MV Mauritius Trochetia

An Open Day on board the MV Mauritius Trochetia was organised by the Mauritius Shipping Corporation Limited (MSCL), yesterday, at the Mauritius Cruise Terminal, Les Salines in Port-Louis, in the context of the celebration of the 58th Anniversary of Independence of the country.

The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, and the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, graced the event.

In his keynote address, Minister Boolell underlined that the Open Day was a unique opportunity for the public to visit the MV Mauritius Trochetia, a symbol of national pride, and gain firsthand insight into MSCL’s operations and service.

Moreover, Dr Arvin Boolell spoke about the potentials of developing the country's port, emphasising that being located in the south-western Indian Ocean, it has significant strategic value and is much sought after. He pointed out that due to the privileged India-Mauritius relations, India is willing to help Mauritius in developing the full potentials of the port.

“We are considering the possibility of coming forward with an Island Container Port which will be advantageous especially in light of the ongoing geopolitical conflicts,” affirmed Mr Boolell. Besides, recalling that Mauritius is the 15th largest Ocean State by virtue of its massive Exclusive Economic Zone, the Minister deemed it important to secure the country’s territorial integrity.

As for the Junior Minister, he remarked that the Open Day marked three key celebrations: the 25 years of MV Mauritius Trochetia, Mauritius' 58th Anniversary of Independence and the 34th Anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius. He stated that the Open Day was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have an exclusive tour of the vessel.

The Junior Minister highlighted that the MV Trochetia, bearing the name of the country's national flower, is the pride of the Nation. He noted that despite 25 years of service in Mauritian waters and having reached the end of its operational lifespan, the ship has been properly maintained and remains in good condition.
